France24: France's Hollande lets down austerity-weary Spain

Reactions to French President François Hollande's first official visit to Spain show a leader once seen as a champion of pro-growth policies and an enemy of German-backed austerity is now disheartening many debt-weary Spaniards

President François Hollande has announced a bilateral Franco-Spanish summit on October 10 after meeting Spanish Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy in Madrid. But many in Spain are beginning to question the French leader’s willingness to stand with them against potentially crippling German-inspired austerity measures.

Everyone is looking at Europe these days as economic and political protests mount across the continent.

The downward spiral has produced a great debate about the virtues of "austerity," the idea that governments with large budget deficits must reduce these deficits -– mainly by cutting spending. If they don't get their budgets in order, so the idea goes, they won't be able to borrow money and will face a fiscal nightmare of ever-rising interest rates.

The problem is that as these governments cut spending in very depressed economies, it has caused growth to slow even further -– you see government workers who have been fired tend to buy fewer goods and services, for example -– and all this means falling tax receipts and thus even bigger deficits.

Greek-operated tanker hijacked off Togo

Pirates have attacked and hijacked a Greek-operated oil tanker off the coast of Togo, in the latest in a spate of attacks on shipping in the Gulf of Guinea. The vessel has 24 Russian crewmembers on board.

According to the International Maritime Bureau (IMB), the vessel, the Energy Centurion, was attacked by armed pirates on Tuesday, 17 miles off the coast of the Togolese capital Lome, where it had been reportedly anchored.

Togolese forces, which learned of the attack at around 2 a.m. (0200 GMT) following a distress signal, engaged the pirates and fired at them but they escaped and the tanker disappeared from sight, officials said. 

"Our patrol vessels went out to help the tanker and there was a gunfire between our forces and the pirates," said Colonel Inoussa Djibril, spokesman for the Togolese army chief of staff.

An official for ship operator Golden Energy Management in Athens said the attack had appeared to be an attempt to steal the 56,000 tonnes of gasoil on board rather than a kidnapping. "It's not piracy, it's robbery," the official told Reuters.

Πιο συγκεκριμένα, η Caterpillar πιστεύει ότι η μείωση του επιτοκίου θα δώσει τέτοια ώθηση στην οικονομία που ο κόσμος θα παρακολουθήσει την Κίνα να ανακτά τη δυναμική της μέχρι το τέλος του χρόνου ή τις αρχές του επόμενου.

Η κινέζική οικονομία αυτό το έτος άγγιξε τους χαμηλότερους ρυθμούς ανάπτυξης των τελευταίων τριών ετών, σε μια προσπάθεια χαλιναγώγησης του πληθωρισμού. Η Caterpillar φαίνεται σίγουρη για την βασιμότητα των προβλέψεων της, οι οποίες βασίζονται στην πεποίθηση πως η ζήτηση για προϊόντα θα αυξηθεί μακροπρόθεσμα καθώς κάποια αναπτυσσόμενα κράτη θα γίνουν πλουσιότερα ενώ θα ολοκληρώνεται σταδιακά η διαδικασία αστικοποίησης.

Μόνο χθες είχαμε το γάλλο πρωθυπουργό να δηλώνει ότι οι ευρωπαίοι είναι «αποφασισμένοι να κάνουν τα πάντα για να βεβαιωθούν ότι η Ελλάδα θα παραμείνει στο ευρώ",τον ηγέτη των γερμανών σοσιαλδημοκρατών να προειδοποιεί ότι " πλανάται όποιος νομίζει ότι η έξοδος της Ελλάδας από το ευρώ θα διευκολύνει την κατάσταση» και βέβαια να μην ξεχάσουμε τη θλίψη της κυρίας Μέρκελ για τον πόνο που υφίστανται οι έλληνες πολίτες...

Stocks Drop With Euro As Spain Delays Bailout Decision

Global stocks fell for a seventh day, Treasuries rose and the euro slid as German and Asian data spurred concern the economy is weakening and Spain delayed making a decision on seeking a bailout until terms are clear.

The MSCI All-Country World Index slid 0.9 percent at 11:03 a.m. in New York, extending its longest losing streak in seven weeks. The Standard & Poor’s 500 Index lost 0.8 percent and U.S. 10-year Treasury yields decreased three basis points to 1.62 percent. The euro lost 0.3 percent to $1.2496, erasing an earlier gain, and Spain’s 10-year yield surged 14 basis points. Oil fell 1.6 percent as Tropical Storm Isaac weakened.

German unemployment increased for a fifth month, retail sales in Japan fell more than estimated and South Korean manufacturers’ confidence stayed near the lowest level since 2009. U.S. reports showed consumer spending rose less than forecast and inflation slowed as investors awaited Fed Chairman Ben S. Bernanke’s speech tomorrow in Wyoming.

How quickly will the US leave Afghanistan?

In the wake of several deaths among its contingent of troops in a previously peaceful province in Afghanistan, New Zealand (like France and South Korea) is now expediting the departure of its 140 soldiers. That's not exactly headline-making news here in the US. If you're an American, you probably didn't even know that New Zealand was playing a small part in our Afghan War. In fact, you may hardly have known about the part Americans are playing in a war that, over the last decade-plus, has repeatedly been labelled "the forgotten war". Still, maybe it's time to take notice. Maybe the flight of those Kiwis should be thought of as a small omen, even if they are departing as decorously, quietly and flightlessly as possible. Because here's the thing: once the November election is over, "expedited departure" could well become an American term and the US, as it slips ignominiously out of Afghanistan, could turn out to be the New Zealand of superpowers.

The 'Arab Spring' and other American seasons

The dubbing of the uprisings in the Arab world by western governments and media as an "Arab Spring" (it is said that the American journal Foreign Policy coined the term first) was not simply an arbitrary or even seasonal choice of nomenclature, but rather a US strategy of controlling their aims and goals.

There have been a number of uprisings in the past several decades in the Arab World, foremost among them the Egyptian uprising in January 1977 against President Sadat's austerity measures, which Sadat dubbed an "uprising of thieves" and the West dubbed "bread riots", the Sudanese uprising against the US-backed dictator Ja'far Numeiri in 1985, and the Palestinian uprisings of 1987-1993 and 2000-2004 against Israeli occupation (which brought the word "intifada" into global usage), but none of these merited the term "Spring".

Remembering the humanitarians

Nine years ago a bomb ripped through the United Nations headquarters in Baghdad killing 22 people, including the UN's chief envoy to Iraq, Sergio Vieira de Mello. Later that same year, a series of suicide bombings struck other targets in Baghdad, including the International Committee of the Red Cross - the first attack of this kind in the ICRC's history. Since then, August 19 has been designated World Humanitarian Day to remind us of those who put themselves at risk to provide humanitarian assistance to people in need. This year’s anniversary will commemorate the highest annual incidence of major attacks against aid workers worldwide yet recorded. In the years that have elapsed since the Baghdad bombings, a number of trends and developments have emerged which profoundly affect how, where and in what circumstances humanitarian workers can provide assistance to populations in peril.

«Νέα παγκόσμια τάξη» ζητά ο Αχμεντινετζάντ

Ο πρόεδρος του Ιράν Μαχμούντ Αχμεντινετζάντ επέκρινε σήμερα τον ΟΗΕ και ζήτησε μια νέα παγκόσμια τάξη στην ομιλία που εκφώνησε κατά την έναρξη της συνόδου κορυφής του Κινήματος των Αδεσμεύτων στην Τεχεράνη.

"Γίνονται πόλεμοι και φόνοι, όλοι τους δικαιολογημένοι από το Συμβούλιο Ασφαλείας του ΟΗΕ», δήλωσε ο Αχμεντινετζάντ, ο οποίος καθόταν στο βήμα δίπλα στον επικεφαλής του ΟΗΕ Μπαν Κι μουν.

Μείωση 6,9% της βιομηχανικής παραγωγής στην ΠΓΔΜ

Συνεχίστηκε και τον Ιούλιο, φέτος, η μείωση της βιομηχανικής παραγωγής στην ΠΓΔΜ, με το γενικό δείκτη να καταγράφει πτώση 6,9% σε σύγκριση με τον αντίστοιχο δείκτη του Ιουλίου 2011.

Σύμφωνα με τα στοιχεία της Στατιστικής Υπηρεσίας της χώρας, η πτώση του γενικού δείκτη κατά 6,9% τον Ιούλιο, οφείλεται κυρίως στη μείωση του δείκτη παραγωγής μεταποιητικών βιομηχανιών κατά 10%.

Targeting Tribal Leaders: A New Militant Tactic in Sinai

Militants killed Egyptian tribal leader Khalaf al-Menahy and his son Aug. 13 as the two were returning from a conference in east Sinai organized and attended by tribal leaders to denounce militancy, according to Sinai security forces. The senior al-Menahy was a prominent proponent of bolstering the Sinai Peninsula's representation in Egypt's parliament and of improving security in the region. He also was a prominent sheikh in the Sawarka tribe, said to be the largest in Sinai. Following his burial Aug. 13, the tribe vowed to seek vengeance.

This is the first reported case of militants attacking tribal leaders in Sinai. It comes soon after an attack on Egyptian security forces Aug. 5 and an attack on military checkpoints in northern Sinai on Aug. 8.
