Turkey in ‘tight race’ for UN Security Council seat

Turkey is in “very tight race” with Spain and New Zealand for one of two available seats on the UN Security Council.

The UN General Assembly’s 193 member states will vote Thursday to elect five new members 

to the UN’s most powerful body and Venezuela’s socialist government is virtually certain to win 

because it is unopposed for the single seat allocated to Latin America and the Caribbean.

Russia and Japan’s Pipeline Dilemma

Despite Russia’s worsening relationship with Western Europe and the U.S. over the Ukrainian crisis, its ties with Japan have tended to be more flexible, even as Tokyo has followed its Western allies by imposing sanctions on Moscow. It was confirmed last week that President Vladimir Putin will meet with Prime Minister Shinzo Abe on the sidelines of the APEC Summit in Beijing next month. Now, it appears an agenda for those talks may be forming.

On Wednesday, the Nikkei reported that Russia is interested in restarting talks to build a natural gas pipelinebetween its Sakhalin Island and Japan’s far northern island of Hokkaido, according to a senior Japanese foreign ministry official. The source said that Russia brought up the plan last month, while also saying “Construction of a pipeline will depend on the Ukraine issue and negotiations over the Northern Territories.”

World losing ground as Ebola infections soar

The world is falling behind in a desperate race to stop the deadly Ebola outbreak, a top UN official warned amid dire predictions that thousands of new infections are possible before year's end.

"Ebola got a head start on us," said Anthony Banbury, head of the UN Mission for Ebola Emergency Response.

Στο μειονοτικό χωριό Δερβιτσάνι που βρίσκεται κοντά στο Αργυρόκαστρο και σε βάρος Ελλήνων συνεχίστηκαν οι προκλητικές ενέργειες Αλβανών, μετά τα επεισόδια που προκλήθηκαν στη διάρκεια του παιχνιδιού μεταξύ Σερβίας και Αλβανίας και είχαν ως αποτέλεσμα την οριστική διακοπή του αγώνα.

Μετά το τέλος του αγώνα, ομάδα ατόμων από περίπου 100 Αλβανούς, κρατώντας σημαίες και πανό με εθνικιστικό περιεχόμενο, πήγαν με τα αυτοκίνητά τους στο χωριό Δερβιτσάνι με στόχο να προκαλέσουν μειονοτικούς Έλληνες που ζουν εκεί.
