    The first U.S. energy secretary, James Schlesinger, observed in 1977 that when it comes to energy, the United States has “only two modes -- complacency and panic.” Today, with the country in the middle of an oil and gas boom that could one day crown it the world’s largest oil producer, the pendulum has swung toward complacency. But 40 years ago this week, panic ruled the day, as petroleum prices quadrupled in a matter of months and Americans endured a traumatic gasoline shortage, waiting for hours in long lines only to be greeted by signs reading “Sorry, no gas.”

From the podium of the U.N. General Assembly, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu seamlessly blended frightening details of Iranian evildoing with images of defenseless Jews “bludgeoned” and “left for dead” by anti-Semites in nineteenth century Europe. Aimed at U.S. and Iranian moves towards diplomacy and a war-weary American public, Netanyahu’s gloomy tirade threatened to cast him as a desperate, diminished figure. Though it was poorly received in the U.S.,alienating even a few of his stalwart pro-Israel allies, his jeremiad served a greater purpose, deflecting attention from his country’s policies towards the group he scarcely mentioned: the Palestinians.

Ξαφνικά “αγάπησαν” τα ελληνικά ομόλογα…

«Τα ομόλογα του ελληνικού δημοσίου, βρίσκονται πάλι σε απόσταση αναπνοής από το υψηλό που κατέγραφαν μετά την κρίση, καθώς η αισιοδοξία που επικρατεί στις πιο εύθραυστες περιοχές της ευρωζώνης και η αλλαγή της βάσης των επενδυτών, πιέζουν τις τιμές προς τα πάνω».

Αυτό αναφέρει η εφημερίδα Wall Street Journal, σε άρθρο του Nick Cawley, με τίτλο «Greek bonds attract new fans» («Τα ελληνικά ονόλογα προσελκύουν νέους οπαδούς». Οι αποδόσεις πέφτουν καθώς η αξία αυξάνεται, σχολιάζει το δημοσίευμα, προσθέτοντας ότι, και ένας δεύτερος δείκτης που παρακολουθείται στενά, αυτός της πρόσθετης απόδοσης για διακράτηση επικίνδυνων τίτλων, καταδεικνύει την αυξανόμενη πρόθεση των επενδυτών να αγοράσουν ελληνικό δημόσιο χρέος.
