Left and right wing terrorism in Italy in the 1970’s: Lessons for Greece.

Italy for almost 15 years faced the menace of both far-right and far-left terrorism. From the late 1960’s to the early 1980’s the lethal face of terrorism brought chaos to the Italian state and intimidated society. To speak of what the 1970s represented in Italy’s political history is probably to speak of the present in Greece; the political situation that preceded those years in Italy bears resemblance to the situation that Greece faces today.

Europe’s Forgotten Neighbours: Union for the Mediterranean

A distinction is often made between European Neighbours and neighbours of Europe within the EU. The former shares a much greater cultural proximity and, behind closed doors, represents candidates for membership. The latter is a purely geographic label. A two-tier Neighbourhood Policy has emerged out of this polarized vision, which has largely neglected Europe’s Southern neighbours.

The Mediterranean holds considerable geopolitical and economic significance for Europe and deserves more attention.

A Reason for Hope in Congo’s Perpetual War

Rocket after rocket ripped across the sky. By Saturday evening, after two straight days of pitched battle with artillery, tanks and mortars, the Congolese Army had driven the M23 rebels out of the strategic town of Kibumba.

Momentum Shifts in Congo’s Battle Against Rebels: Until last summer, rebels had the upper hand in their battle against the Congolese government. But the government, backed by the United Nations, has brought new leadership and vigor to the fight.

“We are victorious,” sang ecstatic soldiers from the back of a truck as dusk fell. “We are the winners.”

The report, by the Washington-based Institute for Science and International Security, claims Iran has significantly shortened the time needed to “break out” to a nuclear bomb with the installation of new centrifuges in the Fordo and Natanz plants, and advanced IR-2 machines at Natanz.
