EADS and BAE in defence tie-up talks
EADS and BAE Systems, Europe ’s
largest aerospace company and biggest defence contractor, are discussing a
€38bn tie-up that would create a European rival to Boeingand reshape the
global defence industry.
EADS would control 60 per cent of the enlarged group,
which would have a unified board and management structure. European governments
have talked for more than a decade about consolidating their national champions
to create a pan-continental competitor to Boeing, the biggest commercial
aerospace company in the US
and also its second-largest defence contractor.

Europe needs a Rooseveltian break with fear
Written by Hugo Brady
The EU has four freedoms – for the movement of goods, services, capital and people. Today, it needs a fifth: the freedom from fear. The euro has become a political doomsday machine, a time-bomb that threatens to destroy the great achievements of European integration: peace, political stability and the creation of the world's largest single market. The global economy is also a hostage to the uncertain fate of the single currency. So too is Europe's credibility as a responsible power.
The euro is a Frankenstein which could destroy its creator, the EU. The currency's dissolution would reap economic chaos, political division and social schism throughout Europe. Eurozone countries share a monetary union but not a treasury, lender of last resort or federal institutions to raise tax and transfer receipts between members. Critics say this unnatural arrangement cannot go on unless euro countries establish an economic – and therefore, political – union that incorporates some or all of these missing elements. But they have yet to explain to Germany's chancellor, Angela Merkel, or other leaders how to sell this to their electorates. They know full well that voters will find the idea unacceptable and dangerous.
It’s Time to De-Russianize the BRICS
With Putin’s ‘return’ to the presidency, Russia is now officially a joke as a serious great power state. True, Putin has been ridiculous for awhile, what with thoseshirtless photo-ops that came across like desperate, bizarre geopolitical ‘ads’ that Russia is still a superpower. But this is different. Not even Chinese elites play the sorts of merry-go-round games at the top that Putin has engineered in the last 6 months. To their great credit, Chinese presidents and premiers serve and go. Russia is now the only one of the BRICS in which power does not rotate. Instead, Putin is starting to look like one of those oil-rich Arab dictators who never leaves, continuallygimmicking the the ‘institutions’ and ‘constitution’ to justify how, mirabile dictu, he keeps staying in power. In the meantime, the real power structure morphs into an oil-dependent, rent-seeking, cronyistic despotism. And like those Arab dictators, Putin is facing a local resistance that increasingly realizes that Putinism is taking their country nowhere but nest-feathering. To paraphrase Helmut Schmidt, Russia’s pretty much a petro-state with nukes at this point.
Why a new European security strategy isn’t needed
Over recent months there have been several – often well-argued and highly-considered – calls for a new European Security Strategy to be drafted. The argument is put that the European Security Strategy of 2003, now almost a decade old, is outdated and requires redrafting so as to better reflect the new security environment of the second decade of the twenty-first century.
This may come as a surprise to those who regularly read European Geostrategy, but I do not entirely agree with this view, no matter how well-intended it might be. This is why:
- In many respects, both the European Security Strategy and the Report on the Implementation of the European Security Strategy of 2008 remain as relevant – and in some respects, more relevant – than they did when they were written. The threats identified in both have not changed; if anything, they have grown worse. The Russian invasion of Georgia and the uprisings in the Middle East have increased the number of disorderly and failed states in the neighbourhood around the European Union; Islamist extremism is still alive and kicking; piracy has expanded; and nuclear proliferation continues to be a major concern, particularly in Iran’s case.
