Η επόμενη κίνηση της Μέρκελ: Θα βάλει η «Αυτοκράτειρα της Λιτότητας» τους σοσιαλιστές επί του σκάφους;

Europe cannot make up its mind about the US pivot

Two years ago the United States announced a renewed focus on the AsiaPacifi c. Its strategic rebalance – also known as the ‘pivot’ – is driven, among other things, by worries about security. But the EU and its member-states are confused about what this American shift means for their security policies. At stake is the direction of European policy towards Asia, and crucially, how Europe sees the future of the transatlantic relationship in the Asian century.
Europe cannot make up its mind about the US pivot
Despite some early attempts to co-operate, Europe has failed to develop a coherent policy in
response to Washington’s initiative. The US put the ‘pivot’ on the agenda of the last EU-US summit in November 2011, and the transatlantic partners agreed to increase their “dialogue on Asia-Pacific issues and co-ordinate activities”. In July 2012, at the ASEAN Regional Forum (a meeting of Asian leaders including the US and EU), a declaration of intent was signed between High Representative Catherine Ashton and then-Secretary of State Hillary Clinton. The declaration mentioned that the US and EU could work together on regional issues such as maritime security, non-proliferation, cyber security and counter-piracy. However, there has been little follow-up. Informally, a group of French, British, German and Italian offi cials and US State Department counterparts regularly compare notes on Washington’s security policy in Asia, but this is more an American one-way street, than a strategic dialogue.

Banking union – or Potemkin village?

Since mid-2012, the eurozone crisis has been in remission. The period of relative calm which has prevailed since then has not been the product of an upturn in economic fortunes: until the recent summer uptick, the eurozone had suff ered six consecutive quarters of declining activity and rising unemployment (a result in part of synchronised fi scal austerity across
the region as a whole). Instead, the period of peace has refl ected two factors: the increased willingness of the European Central Bank (ECB), under Mario Draghi’s presidency, to act as a lender of last resort to governments; and a belated recognition by European leaders that the eurozone suff ers from design fl aws that need correcting. Sadly, the success of the fi rst factor
appears to have had unfortunate consequences on the second.
Banking union – or Potemkin village?
A design fl aw that was not spotted by critics when the eurozone was launched, and that only
became apparent after the 2008 fi nancial crisis, was the instability of a fi scally decentralised
currency union backed by a limited mandate central bank. This confi guration, it turned out,
gave rise to stresses in the eurozone that did not arise in the US. The most destabilising of
these was the emergence of ‘doom loops’ in which fragile banks and fi scally weak sovereigns
undermined each other. Reducing memberstates’ vulnerability to these spirals required
the eurozone to establish a banking union. The trouble, however, is that the ECB’s success in
lowering government bond yields in countries like Spain and Italy appears to have reduced thesense of urgency felt by European leaders to build a banking union.

Geopolitical Journey: The U.S.-European Relationship, Then and Now

I am writing this from Greece, having spent the past week in Europe and having moved among various capitals. Most discussions I've had in my travels concern U.S. President Barack Obama's failure to move decisively against Syria and how Russian President Vladimir Putin outmatched him. Of course, the Syrian intervention had many aspects, and one of the most important ones, which was not fully examined, was what it told us about the state of U.S.-European relations and of relations among European countries. This is perhaps the most important question on the table.
We have spoken of the Russians, but for all the flash in their Syria performance, they are economically and militarily weak -- something they would change if they had the means to do so. It is Europe, taken as a whole, that is the competitor for the United States. Its economy is still slightly larger than the United States', and its military is weak, though unlike Russia this is partly by design.

Central Asia and Afghanistan: A Tumultuous History

Central Asia and the U.S. Afghan Withdrawal
Contrary to popular perception, Central Asia is not likely to see an immediate explosion of violence and militancy after the U.S. and NATO drawdown from Afghanistan in 2014. However, Central Asia's internal issues and the region's many links with Afghanistan -- including a web of relationships among militant groups -- will add to the volatility in the region.

The draft decision of the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons obtained by The Associated Press also authorizes the body to inspect “any other site identified by a State Party as having been involved in the Syrian chemical weapons program, unless deemed unwarranted by the Director-General.”

- Η τελευταία φορά που μιλήσαμε ήταν σχεδόν ακριβώς ένα χρόνο πριν. Ας αρχίσουμε με την εξέταση μερικών από όσα συνέβησαν στην Τουρκία κατά τους τελευταίους 12 μήνες. Το καλοκαίρι ήταν γεμάτο διαδηλώσεις, η Τουρκία έχασε την μάχη για τους Ολυμπιακούς Αγώνες του 2020, το Κουρδικό Εργατικό Κόμμα (ΡΚΚ) ανακοίνωσε πρόσφατα ότι σταματά την απόσυρση των μαχητών του, και η οικονομία επιβραδύνεται. Είστε τόσο αισιόδοξος σήμερα για το μέλλον της Τουρκίας, όπως ήσαστε πριν από ένα χρόνο;
