(Upd) Στις καλένδες παραπέμπεται η σύσταση του ελληνικού επενδυτικού Ταμείου, ενός από τα βασικά χρηματοδοτικά εργαλεία τα οποία προσπαθούσε να προωθήσει η κυβέρνηση κυρίως με τη χρηματοδοτική υποστήριξη των Γερμανών.

Οσο παράδοξο κι αν ακούγεται,η Κύπρος έχει προσφέρει αναλογικά περισσότερα από τη Γερμανία στα πακέτα στήριξης της Ευρωζώνης, αν και βρίσκεται η ίδια τελεί υπό σχέδιο διάσωσης, ενώ  αναγκάστηκε να προχωρήσει μάλιστα στο κούρεμα των τραπεζικών της καταθέσεων.

Πρώτο το κόμμα του Γιούνκερ με μειωμένο ποσοστό

Το Χριστιανικό Κοινωνικό Λαϊκό Κόμμα (CSV) του απερχόμενου πρωθυπουργού Ζαν-Κλοντ Γιούνκερ έρχεται πρώτο στις πρόωρες βουλευτικές εκλογές που διεξήχθησαν σήμερα στο Λουξεμβούργο, αλλά χάνει ένα ποσοστό 4,6% των ψήφων και 3 έδρες, σύμφωνα με μια πρώτη εκτίμηση που έκανε το ινστιτούτο TNS για λογαριασμό του τηλεοπτικού δικτύου RTL.

Σύμφωνα με αυτήν, το CSV του Γιούνκερ θα εξασφαλίσει το 33,4% των ψήφων, έναντι του 38% που είχε λάβει το 2009, και 23 έδρες έναντι των 26 που είχε μετά τις προηγούμενες εκλογές.

Με την ηγετική ομάδα του SPD στο πλευρό του και την έγκριση των συνέδρων να διαπραγματευτεί μια κυβερνητική συμφωνία με τους Χριστιανοδημοκράτες, ο Ζίγκμαρ Γκάμπριελ ετοιμάζεται για το μεγάλο «παζάρι» με την Ανγκελα Μέρκελ, το οποίο θα ξεκινήσει την Τετάρτη.

Ο αρχηγός του SPD Ζ. Γκάμπριελ ξεκαθάρισε ότι «όταν κανείς ξεκινά διαπραγματεύσεις θέτει ως στόχο να τις φέρει σε πέρας με επιτυχία»

«Χαιρόμαστε που θα αρχίσουν οι συνομιλίες με το CDU», δήλωσε ο Γκάμπριελ εξερχόμενος του μίνι συνεδρίου των Σοσιαλδημοκρατών, όπου 229 σύνεδροι έδωσαν το πράσινο φως στον αρχηγό τους και μόλις 31 εξέφρασαν την αντίθεσή τους σε μια συγκυβέρνηση με τους Χριστιανοδημοκράτες.

The U.S. Debt Crisis from the Founders' Perspective

The U.S. government is paralyzed, and we now face the possibility that the United States will default on its debt. Congress is unable to resolve the issue, and President Obama is as obstinate as the legislators who oppose him. To some extent, our political system is functioning as intended -- the Founding Fathers meant for it to be cumbersome. But as they set out to form a more perfect union, they probably did not anticipate the extent to which we have been able to cripple ourselves.

Striving for ineffectiveness seems counterintuitive. But there was a method to the founders' madness, and we first need to consider their rationale before we apply it to the current dilemma afflicting Washington.

What is a Dictator?

What is a dictator, or an authoritarian? I'll bet you think you know. But perhaps you don't. Sure, Adolf Hitler, Joseph Stalin, and Mao Zedong were dictators. So were Saddam Hussein and both Hafez and Bashar al Assad. But in many cases the situation is not that simple and stark. In many cases the reality -- and the morality -- of the situation is far more complex.

Deng Xiaoping was a dictator, right? After all, he was the Communist Party boss of China from 1978 to 1992. He was not elected. He ruled through fear. He approved the massacre of protesters at Tiananmen Square in Beijing in 1989. But he also led China in the direction of a market economy that raised the standard of living and the degree of personal freedoms for more people in a shorter period of time than perhaps ever before in recorded economic history. For that achievement, one could arguably rate Deng as one of the greatest men of the 20th century, on par with Winston Churchill and Franklin D. Roosevelt.
