India-U.S. Energy Ties: Ending Protectionism

It is time for India and the United States, the world’s leading democracies, to become full-fledged energy partners. Doing so will go far toward making the U.S. and India true strategic partners and driving cooperation on a host of issues from climate change to maritime security. With President Obama having accepted Prime Minister Modi’s invitation to be the Chief Guest at this year’s Republic Day celebrations, now is the time for the U.S. and India to make progress on energy across the board.
However, a full energy partnership will require policy adjustments on both sides. For the U.S., this will mean changing policies that are clearly protectionist in regard to the export of liquefied natural gas (LNG) and oil. In regard to LNG, the U.S. has one set of export standards for countries with which the U.S. has free trade agreements and another far more onerous set for India and other countries with which the U.S. does not have such agreements. While some in the U.S. favor discrimination on environmental grounds (on the theory that hindering exports of LNG will deter fracking), economic protectionist factors are paramount. Opposition in the U.S. Congress to change has come from northeastern representatives who believe that exports will lead to increased gas prices for home heating and cooking. A coalition of companies in gas intensive manufacturing also has opposed change supposedly to keep gas cheap for their own use.

Japan wrestles with wartime legacy as it starts selling weapons

Seventy years after the end of World War II, talk about any kind of military expansion remains highly sensitive here in Japan.
Japan wrestles with history as it starts selling weapons
Just consider the position of Akifumi Arai, president of the Tamagawa Trading Company, a relatively small Nagano-based business that supplies sensors and gyroscopes used to guide torpedoes and missiles for Japan’s self-defense forces.

Pakistan: The Counter-productiveness of Military Courts

Of all the coups, overt and covert since 1947, the military in Pakistan should be smiling at the invitation by the Parliament to set up military courts. As a phenomenon and institution, the military courts are not new in the democratic history of nations; numerous countries have gone through this process in establishing them for a specific purpose at a particular time in their history.
Will the military courts that are being set up in Pakistan with the passage of 21st Constitutional Amendment Bill 2015 along with Pakistan Army Act (Amendment) Bill 2015 by a two-third majority in the Parliament lead to further erosion of democratic hold over governance? Or, will it only result in addressing the militancy in Pakistan, as it is being projected by the powerless government in power? Is this a right strategy for Pakistan?

China-North Korea: Reasons for Reconciliation

On the occasion of the third death anniversary of North Korean leader Kim Jong-il on 17 December 2014, Chinese President Xi Jinping sent a special message to the North Korean embassy in Bejing. The Chinese President underlined the significance of their “traditional friendship.” Xi Jinping also said that that China “is ready to work with the DPRK to maintain, consolidate and develop the traditional friendship.”
It is definitely a clear departure from the recent attitude of Xi Jinping and China towards North Korea. First, the message was delivered to the North Korean embassy in Beijing by the fifth highest official in the Chinese Communist Party hierarchy, Liu Yunshan. Second, it has been the most open and straight forward statement by the Chinese President emphasising China’s old friendship with North Korea since he assumed power in early 2013.

LNG Another Casualty Of Low Oil Prices

The oil industry is facing rising debt from collapsing oil prices, but there could be another sector that becomes a casualty of the low oil price environment: liquefied natural gas (LNG).
LNG Another Casualty Of Low Oil Prices
Much of the global LNG trade occurs in Asia, where buying and selling occurs according to long-term fixed contracts that are indexed to the price of oil. As a result, when oil prices were high, so were LNG prices. That is exactly why there has been a rush along the U.S. Gulf Coast to begin exporting cheap American natural gas to take advantage of high prices in Asia.

Religion Is Not the Enemy: Salman Rushdie blames the "Charlie Hebdo" killings on "religion.” He’s got the wrong culprit.

It was entirely appropriate that one of the first people to weigh in after theCharlie Hebdo massacre was Salman Rushdie, the man who spent yearsof his life defying a state-sponsored death threat prompted by a presumed act of blasphemy. Though Rushdie isn’t one of my favorite novelists, I’ve always admired his firm stand in defense of the freedom of speech — and I’m glad that the British government had the guts to defend his rights.
Religion Is Not the Enemy
By the same token, I don’t in any way dispute his right to make the statement that he issued yesterday — even though I find myself in rather strong disagreement with it. Here’s what he said:
