How The Economy Is Tied To Energy – Part 2

In Part 1 of this series, I talked about why cheap fuels act to create economic growth. In this post, we will look at some supporting data showing how this connection works. The data is over a very long time period–some of it going back to the Year 1 C. E.
How The Economy Is Tied To Energy – Part 2
We know that there is a close connection between energy use (and in fact oil use) and economic growth in recent years.

A new theory of energy and the economy – Part 1 – Generating economic growth

How does the economy really work? In my view, there are many erroneous theories in published literature. I have been investigating this topic and have come to the conclusion that both energy and debt play an extremely important role in an economic system. Once energy supply and other aspects of the economy start hitting diminishing returns, there is a serious chance that a debt implosion will bring the whole system down.

In this post, I will look at the first piece of this story, relating to how the economy is tied to energy, and how the leveraging impact of cheap energy creates economic growth. In order for economic growth to occur, the wages of workers need to go farther and farther in buying goods and services. Low-priced energy products are far more effective in producing this situation than high-priced energy products. Substituting high-priced energy products for low-priced energy products can be expected to lead to lower economic growth.

Want to Hurt the Islamic State? Here’s How.

The Islamic State’s latest atrocities have triggered global revulsion.Beheading two utterly harmless and innocent Japanese men, Haruna Yukawa and Kenji Goto, was bad enough. Earlier this week the executioners decided they had to up the ante by putting the captured Jordanian pilot Moaz al-Kasasbeh in a cage and burning him alive. Today, they’re claimingthat a 26-year-old American female hostage, Kayla Mueller, was killed by Jordanian airstrikes. Needless to say, Islamic State (IS) leaders have been eager to compound the obscenity of these killings by distributing video of them across the web.
Want to Hurt the Islamic State? Here’s How.
The reaction has been predictable: outrage and indignation. President Obama describes IS as a “brutal, vicious death cult.” He’s right. But what are we going to do about it? In his confirmation hearings this week, Ashton Carter, the president’s nominee for secretary of defense, said that U.S. strategy should aim to impose a “lasting defeat” on IS. Part of this, he said, has to involve “partners on the ground.” He was talking about Jordan, a country whose people now appear unified by horror over the killing of their compatriot.

How Low Oil Prices Will Impact Southeast Asia

Over the past six months, declining oil prices have sent shockwaves through the global economy, providing much-needed relief to consumers and factories in some countries while slashing export revenues and undermining currencies and government budgets in others. But the longer oil prices hover near six-year lows, the more they will affect the prices of natural gas and other commodities and manufactured goods, particularly those from Southeast Asia.
Overall, falling oil prices and East Asia's broader economic and geopolitical evolutions will have mixed effects on the region. If they remain low, the prices of oil, natural gas and commodities could deter foreign investment into more expensive offshore and enhanced oil recovery projects in countries like Indonesia and Malaysia. At the same time, cheap energy will provide a boost to consumers and manufacturers that could improve trade throughout the region. Low energy costs could even help governments accelerate political and regulatory reforms designed to improve transparency and continuity for foreign investors — a critical precursor to successful regional economic integration.

REUTERS/Luke MacGregor

Should the European Treaties Be Changed?

Before the present EU nation-states can aspire to a proper political unification, they should first integrate. In view of this, a few of their national Members of Parliament, professionally chosen and specially appointed, should become itinerant MPs and reside in other hosting EU states working with their national parliaments and not in Strasbourg. The European Central Bank should extend its range of action and pursue further aims than the present treaties allow.

Greece’s brinkmanship

Syrisa triumphed in the Greek elections on January 25th. Little time has passed, and yet we can already take a step back and evaluate the event. After a week of astonishment at watching a government actually applying its program (and holding its promises, for a change…), after having duly taken note of the first political actions of Alexis Tsipras’ team (and of his new minister of finances), after having seen the “Troïka,” that is, the alliance of the IMF, the European Central Bank and the European Commission, being remaindered to the storage room of out dated accessories [1], the time has come to examine the strategy of Syriza.

France, Germany make last-ditch peace effort as U.S. weighs arming Ukraine

The leaders of Germany and France on Thursday announced a surprise diplomatic bid to end the conflict in Ukraine, working to forestall White House deliberations about arming government forces amid fears that the war could quickly spiral out of control.
The new peace effort came as civilian and military casualties have mounted by the hundreds in recent weeks. German Chancellor Angela Merkel and French President François Hollande said they would fly to Moscow on Friday to meet Russian President Vladimir Putin to try to strike a deal. The unusual journey underscored the high stakes in the effort to quell the bloodiest European conflict since the Balkan wars of the 1990s.
