Στη δημοσιότητα ο φάκελος της ελληνικής διαπραγμάτευσης στο Eurogroup

Τον φάκελο με τις δύο ομιλίες του υπουργού Οικονομικών, κ. Γ. Βαρουφάκη, στα δύο τελευταία Eurogroup και τα δύο non paper που η ελληνική αντιπροσωπεία έδωσε στο Eurogroup αναφορικά με τις θέσεις της Αθήνας και τα αποτελέσματα των τεχνικών διαβουλεύσεων που πργαματοποιήθηκαν στις 13-15 Φεβρουαρίου έδωσε στη δημοσιότητα το υπουργείο Οικονομικών.

Από αυτά προκύπτει ότι ο κ. Βαρουφάκης αποδεχόταν την παράταση της δανειακής σύμβασης, αλλά όχι του προγράμματος, ενώ γινόταν αναφορά και στις δεσμεύσεις που θα αναλάμβανε να φέρεις εις πέρας η κυβέρνηση στο διάστημα του «προγράμματος γέφυρα» που πρότεινε για τους επόμενους 3-6 μήνες. Αυτές είναι:

Shell is back in; Statoil is pensive, but eager; and Russia is pushing ahead. Low prices have stunted exploration, but the Arctic is still a hotbed (read: marginally warm-bed) of activity. With so much to lose in the fragile and costly environment, why are we there?

One – albeit simple – answer numbers around 90 billion or 1,670 trillion depending on your business. The United States Geological Survey estimates that the area above the Arctic Circle holds 90 billion barrels (bbl) of undiscovered, technically recoverable oil and 1,670 trillion cubic feet of technically recoverable natural gas. That’s good for 13 percent of the undiscovered oil and 30 percent of the undiscovered natural gas in the world. Still, it’s not easily accessible – or easy to market – with most of the hydrocarbons occurring under the inhospitable and often frozen Arctic seas.

Weimar on the Aegean

Try to talk about the policies we need in a depressed world economy, and someone is sure to counter with the specter of Weimar Germany, supposedly an object lesson in the dangers of budget deficits and monetary expansion. But the history of Germany after World War I is almost always cited in a curiously selective way. We hear endlessly about the hyperinflation of 1923, when people carted around wheelbarrows full of cash, but we never hear about the much more relevant deflation of the early 1930s, as the government of Chancellor Brüning — having learned the wrong lessons — tried to defend Germany’s peg to gold with tight money and harsh austerity.

Παρά τις προσδοκίες της εκεχειρίας που συμφωνήθηκε στις 12 Φεβρουαρίου στην Λευκορωσία για τον τερματισμό των εχθροπραξιών στην ανατολική Ουκρανία, αυτή θα μπορούσε να αποτύχει όπως εκείνη που προηγήθηκε, τον Σεπτέμβριο του 2014. Αν και η συμφωνία θα τεθεί σε ισχύ το Σάββατο, έντονες διαμάχες έχουν ήδη αναφερθεί σε στρατηγικές πόλεις όπως το Ντεμπαλτσέβε. Εάν η ειρηνευτική συμφωνία δεν τηρηθεί, η κυβέρνηση του προέδρου Μπαράκ Ομπάμα θα βρεθεί τότε κάτω από ακόμη μεγαλύτερες πιέσεις να στείλει θανατηφόρα όπλα στην κυβέρνηση στο Κίεβο, δεδομένου ότι οι αυτονομιστές στις αυτοαποκαλούμενες Λαϊκές Δημοκρατίες του Ντόνετσκ και του Luhansk στην ανατολική Ουκρανία προχωρούν στο πεδίο της μάχης χάρη στην παροχή στρατευμάτων και όπλων από την Ρωσία. Αν και οι ακριβείς αριθμοί παραμένουν υπό αμφισβήτηση (και παρά την σταθερή και πλέον κωμική άρνηση του Κρεμλίνου), τακτικά ρωσικά στρατεύματα έχουν εμπλακεί στην υπόθεση. Η Μόσχα στέλνει επίσης ολοένα και πιο εξελιγμένα οπλικά συστήματα[1] στις δυνάμεις των ανταρτών.

Will we ever see a land value tax?

One of economics’ most elegant taxes is also its least understood. For a more efficient and equitable tax system, this should, but probably won’t, change.

“The annual produce of the land and labour of the society, the real wealth and revenue of the great body of the people, might be the same after such a tax as before.”

It is perhaps unsurprising that the quote above was written by none other than Adam Smith in The Wealth of Nations. It is surprising, however, that the almost implausibly efficient levy Smith is referring to is practically unknown and largely untested in economies across the world: the land value tax (LVT).

Population Decline and the Great Economic Reversal

In recent weeks, we have been focusing on Greece,Germany, Ukraine andRussia. All are still burning issues. But in every case, readers have called my attention to what they see as an underlying and even defining dimension of all these issues — if not right now, then soon. That dimension is declining population and the impact it will have on all of these countries. The argument was made that declining populations will generate crises in these and other countries, undermining their economies and national power. Sometimes we need to pause and move away from immediate crises to broader issues. Let me start with some thoughts from my book The Next 100 Years.
