The plight of Syria’s vulnerable Christian minority

Before a brutal civil war engulfed Syria, the country was testament to the religious and ethnic diversity of the Middle East. Arabs of different faiths, Kurds, Armenians, Assyrian Christians and others lived side by side, embracing a rather durable Syrian nationalism.
But the increasingly sectarian character of the Syrian conflict and the rise of the Islamic State threaten to unravel the rich tapestry of Syrian society. In neighboring Iraq, the ravages of militants have forced tens of thousands of religious minorities, including Christians, to flee. Last year, the top Christian priest in Baghdad likened the present moment to the horrifying onslaught of the Mongol hordes in the 13th Century, which devastated the region and redrew its political map.

The Commission’s energy union ‘strategy’: A rebranded work programme

The European Commission’s grandly-titled ‘Framework strategy for a resilient energy union with a forward-looking climate change policy’ was published on February 25th. It contains
sensible proposals. If all were enacted, EU energy and climate policies would be significantly

improved. But they will not all be enacted – at least not in the lifetime of this Commission. A

credible strategy needs priorities, resources and a clear timetable. This publication identifies

only one very general priority (‘obey the rules’) and one very specific one (extend the energy

market in South-East Europe). A forward-looking climate policy initiative would contain some

new proposals: this paper does not. This paper is essentially a restatement of the

Commission’s existing work programme, now rebranded as an energy union.

Energy union

European integration has always been rules-based. Yet the Commission identifies “the

implementation and enforcement of existing EU legislation” as the first priority of its new

strategy. Specifically, it promises to insist that member-states implement the third energy

market package. This is sensible, but not new: the Commission has been insisting that

national governments implement this package ever since it was adopted in 2009.

In China, Suspicions Cloud Trade Dispute Involving Tech Companies

At an elegant guesthouse here recently, China’s top Internet regulator entertained ambassadors and diplomats with platters of tempura and roast on a spit, unusual lavishness in an era of official austerity in China, to celebrate the Chinese New Year.

But the graciousness came with a warning: Foreign companies had to behave if they wanted to stay in China’s $450 billion technology market.

Norway still optimistic over Arctic oil

The drastic fall in oil prices has made petroleum explorations in the Barents Sea seemingly unprofitable. Yet, despite severe economic, technological and environmental concerns, the Norwegian government pushes for increased activities, and recently handed out exploration licenses in the Barents Sea.
Norway still optimistic over Arctic oil
The huge fall in global oil prices since June from $115 to around $50 has dramatically lowered cost-margins in the volatile petroleum industry. After 5 years of stable high prices, the recent fall in oil prices is attributed to several reasons: sluggish economic output, the shale gas revolution in the US, a switch to alternative fuels, and finally the unwillingness of OPEC and the Saudis to sacrifice their market share by cutting productions.

Transfer Denied: The Hidden Costs of Washington’s War Against al-Shabab

As a child, Noor Dubow fled war in his homeland of Somalia. Growing up, he fought constantly against hunger while living in a refugee camp in neighboring Kenya. Today, he wears a tie to work, goes to school at night, and lives in a tightknit Somali community in America’s heartland. But Dubow, 29, still struggles with fear — not for himself, but for relatives left behind who are about to be cut off from his financial lifeline.
Transfer Denied: The Hidden Costs of Washington’s War Against al-Shabab
Since moving to Columbus five years ago, Dubow regularly has sent money to his family through an ever-dwindling number of banks willing to wire funds to private financial firms in Somalia. The last major bank in the United States to do so abruptly stopped this month, worried about prosecution or other liabilities should the money be seized by militants who are ravaging the East African country.
