Από το 2013, η Κίνα έχει δημοσιοποιήσει το σχέδιό της για το Νέο Δρόμο του Μεταξιού. Ξεκίνησε μια μαζική εκστρατεία δημοσίων σχέσεων, η οποία αφήνει ακόμη ανοικτό και το ενδεχόμενο του «Τουριστικού Δρόμου του Μεταξιού», για να μετατρέψει την ιδέα ενός παγκόσμιου δικτύου μεταφοράς σε κίνητρο για συνεργασία με την Κίνα και την έκφραση μιας ασιατικής «κοινότητας του πεπρωμένου». Αλλά η Κίνα θα αντιμετωπίσει τεράστιες προκλήσεις στην προσπάθειά της να μετατρέψει το Νέο Δρόμο του Μεταξιού σε πραγματικότητα. With the US trade deficit at a six-year high, analysts have attributed the widening gap to a strong appreciation of the US dollar coupled with labor strikes at ports along the California coast. Is the rising deficit a true economic signal, or just noise?

Last week saw a perfect storm for US trade as the Department of Commerce reported the highest trade deficit since October 2008. The trade deficit ballooned by 43% in the month of March, making it the biggest month-to-month jump in 18 years.

Το σχέδιο είναι θετικό κυρίως για τις χώρες του Νότου και ιδιαίτερα για όσες καλούνται άμεσα να αντιμετωπίσουν μεταναστευτικές ροές, όπως η Ελλάδα, η Ιταλία και η Μάλτα, καθώς για πρώτη φορά προτείνεται η ανακατανομή στο εσωτερικό της Ε.Ε. μεταναστών αιτουμένων άσυλο, ώστε να μειωθεί η πίεση που ασκείται στα άνω κράτη-μέλη.
