The Greeks, Italians, Spaniards and Irish walk into a bar, where the French and Germans are the bartenders. It’s happy hour, and the Germans and the French are serving half-price drinks. Although everyone quickly drinks too much, the bartenders keep on serving. Eventually, the inebriated customers head home and get into all kinds of trouble -- fights, car accidents, some broken windows.

Euro zone countries tried in vain to stop the IMF publishing a gloomy analysis of Greece's debt burden which the leftist government says vindicates its call to voters to reject bailout terms, sources familiar with the situation said on Friday.

The document released in Washington on Thursday said Greece's public finances will not be sustainable without substantial debt relief, possibly including write-offs by European partners of loans guaranteed by taxpayers.

Germany emerged from the second world war still owing debt that originated with the first world war: the reparations imposed on the country following the Versailles peace conference in 1919. Many, including John Maynard Keynes, argued that these unpayable debts and the economic policies they entailed led to the rise of the Nazis and the second world war.

Η Αθήνα ψήφισε «όχι»

Δεκάδες χιλιάδες κόσμου έδωσε το «παρών» στη συγκέντρωση του Συντάγματος, στηρίζοντας την επιλογή της κυβέρνησης για το «όχι» στο δημοψήφισμα της Κυριακής. Η πρωτοφανής συγκέντρωση θύμισε παλαιότερες εποχές, όπως και τις κινητοποιήσεις των Αγανακτισμένων από το πρόσφατο παρελθόν.

Στη «Μεγάλη Συγκέντρωση του ΟΧΙ – Μεγάλη Γιορτή του Λαού» του Συντάγματος, απηύθυνε χαιρετισμό ο πρωθυπουργός Αλέξης Τσίπρας, καλώντας τον λαό να ψηφίσει «όχι» για «Ευρώπη με αξιοπρέπεια και δημοκρατία».

Η Λίλια Μοζεσντοτίρ, η οποία αντιτάχθηκε στη διάσωση της τράπεζας Icesave, κατά τη θητεία της, προέδρευσε της κοινοβουλευτικής επιτροπής για τη ρύθμιση του χρηματοπιστωτικού συστήματος της Ισλανδίας μετά από την κατάρρευσή του και της κοινοβουλευτικής επιτροπής κοινωνικών υποθέσεων. Το  2010 διατέλεσε αντιπρόεδρος του Συμβουλίου της Ευρώπης.

Οι αξιωματούχοι συναντήθηκαν σε ένα μεγάλο, λευκό δωμάτιο γεμάτο με γαλάζιες καρέκλες. Ο υπουργός Εσωτερικών Μοχάμεντ Ιμπραήμ (έκτοτε απολυθείς) ήταν εκεί, μαζί με τον πρόεδρο της ACA Muhammad Amr Heiba (πλέον αντικατασταθέντα και νυν σύμβουλο του προέδρου Αμπντέλ Φατάχ αλ Σίσι), τον σύμβουλο του υπουργού Δικαιοσύνης Azzat Khamis, και τον Khalid Saeed, τον πρόεδρο της τεχνικής γραμματείας του σώματος που τώρα είναι γνωστό ως η Εθνική Συντονιστική Επιτροπή για την Καταπολέμηση της Διαφθοράς (National Coordinating Committee for Combating Corruption).

Syriza can’t just cave in. Europe’s elites want regime change in Greece

It’s now clear that Germany and Europe’s powers that be don’t just want the Greek government to bend the knee. They want regime change. Not by military force, of course – this operation is being directed from Berlin and Brussels, rather than Washington.

 ‘There’s no suggestion of genuine compromise. The aim is apparently to humiliate Tsipras and his government in preparation for its early replacement with a more pliable administration.’

But that the German chancellor Angela Merkel and the troika of Greece’s European and International Monetary Fund creditors are out to remove the elected government in Athens now seems beyond serious doubt. Everything they have done in recent weeks in relation to the leftist Syriza administraton, elected to turn the tide of austerity, appears designed to divide or discredit Alexis Tsipras’s government.
