NYSE resumes trading after unprecedented shutdown

The New York Stock Exchange reopened Wednesday after an unprecedented, nearly four-hour halt in trading that authorities said was caused by a major technical glitch.

The freeze in trading at one of the world’s largest exchanges was highly unusual. A U.S. official told The Washington Post that there was “no indication” that the problems were the result of a cyberattack. The person, speaking on condition of anonymity, added that the incident “seems like a technical issue.”

A Pain in the Athens: Why Greece Isn't to Blame for the Crisis

Αποτέλεσμα εικόνας για A Pain in the Athens
When the anti-austerity party Syriza came to power in Greece in January 2015, Cornel Ban and I wrote in a Foreign Affairs article that, at some point, Europe was bound to face an Alexis Tsipras, the party’s leader and Greek prime minister, “because there’s only so long you can ask people to vote for impoverishment today based on promises of a better tomorrow that never arrives.” Despite attempts by the eurogroup, the European Central Bank, and the International Monetary Fund since February 2015 to harangue Greece into ever more austerity, the Greeks voted by an even bigger margin than they voted for Syriza to say “no” once more. So the score is now democracy 2, austerity 0. But now what? To answer that question, we need to be clear about what this crisis is and what it is not. Surprisingly, despite endless lazy moralizing commentary to the contrary, Greece has very little to do with the crisis that bears its name. To see why, it is best to follow the money—and those who bank it.

Greece is the latest battleground in the financial elite’s war on democracy

Greece may be financially bankrupt, but the troika is politically bankrupt. Those who persecute this nation wield illegitimate, undemocratic powers, powers of the kind now afflicting us all. Consider the International Monetary Fund. The distribution of power here was perfectly stitched up: IMF decisions require an 85% majority, and the US holds 17% of the votes.

The IMF is controlled by the rich, and governs the poor on their behalf. It’s now doing to Greece what it has done to one poor nation after another, from Argentina to Zambia. Its structural adjustment programmes have forced scores of elected governments to dismantle public spending, destroying health, education and all the means by which the wretched of the earth might improve their lives.

CHINA

Is the Euroskeptics’ boon, investors’ bane?

The formation of ‘Europe of Nations and Freedoms’, another anti-EU bloc in the European Parliament, will give Euroskeptics a stronger voice at the supranational level. However, doubts remain on the stability and impact of the cobbled-together group.
Is the Euroskeptics’ boon, investors’ bane?
Last Tuesday, far-right leaders Marine le Pen (French, Front National) and Geert Wilders (Dutch, Freedom Party) announced the creation of their new ‘Europe of Nations and Freedoms’ (ENF) political grouping in the European Parliament.

Contrary To What Most People Think, Greeks Work The Longest Hours In Europe [Infographic]

Amidst the financial crisis, ordinary Greeks have earned the unflattering reputation as over-paid and lazy workers who retire far too early. This week, eurozone finance ministers reprimanded Greece for dragging its heels in the two weeks since they reached an agreement on extending the country’s bailout, which did not help.  However, contrary to what most people think, Greeks actually work the longest hours in Europe.

Here's The Truth About Greece That Many Germans Won't Like To Hear

Greece's is facing a massive economic crisis. And of course, most Germans have seen it coming. It’s so obvious, that when it comes to national finances, the “Bankrupt Greeks“ are simply not as disciplined as the Germans. Right?
GREECE GERMANY BANKRUPTCY
There is a general assumption that Europe’s future is jeopardized by “the Greeks,“ and the German newspaper Bild did the math, converting the financial aid into truck loads: “In order to get 215.7 billion euros in bills of 100 euros on a truck to Athens, you would have to send off 88 40-ton trucks."
