French companies join European push to rejoin Iran market after sanctions

Wrapping up his four-day trip to Italy and France, Iranian President Hassan Rouhani on Thursday added French automaker PSA Peugeot Citroën and aircraft giant Airbus to a growing profile of European companies seeking to return to Iran.

The quick bids for footholds in Iran — less than two weeks after international sanctions were rolled back — reflect the eagerness in Europe to tap into the large Iranian consumer market and get a head start on potential rivals from the United States and elsewhere.

GRI’s 2015 year in risk review

The year 2015 very much seemed to be a year of transition (and not generally for the better), filled with many surprises.

The staying power of the Islamic State

Perhaps even more shocking that the initial rise and onslaught of the group now known as ISIS is their staying power: under not insignificant military pressure from the U.S., Iraq, Syria, several European/NATO states, various rebels groups and nominally Russia (which is targeting mainly non-ISIS groups) and some (minor) action from Arab nations, ISIS has not only survived but thrived.

On Jan. 21, billionaire investor George Soros said he was betting against Asian currencies, telling Bloomberg Television that “A hard landing is practically unavoidable” in China. The Chinese currency has dropped 5.7 percent since August, when the central bank allowed it to depreciate. “I’m not expecting it,” he added. “I’m observing it.” Though Soros didn’t specifically mention the renminbi, China’s currency, ruling Communist Party mouthpiece People’s Daily attacked him in a Jan. 26 article for suggesting he might short the renminbi, comparing such a move to “declaring war on China’s currency.” In this ChinaFile conversation, experts discussion if Soros may be right.

THE BREXIT EQUATION: EU MINUS UK = ?

Brexit would change the EU as well as the UK. What kind of partner would a diminished EU be for Britain and the rest of the world?
The Brexit equation: EU minus UK = ?

Most discussions of the UK’s possible exit from the EU focus on what Britain would be like afterwards: whether it could trade more freely with the world, escape EU regulations and reduce immigration. Equally important, however, is what the EU would be like afterwards; and how in turn this might affect post-Brexit relations between the UK and the EU.

Russia, Japan and North Korea’s Nuclear Test

On January 6, 2016, North Korea’s state media announced that the DPRK had successfully tested a hydrogen bomb. North Korea’s nuclear test resulted in a predictable array of international condemnations, but Russia’s harsh response to the DPRK’s belligerent action was especially intriguing.

Russia’s permanent representative to the United Nations, Vladimir Voronkov described North Korea’s nuclear test as a clear violation of international law and a national security threat. Admiral Vladimir Komoyedov, the head of the Russian State Duma’s defense committee echoed Voronkov’s statement, calling North Korea’s nuclear test “frightening” and urging the international community to contain the DPRK’s growing nuclear potential. Following from this rhetoric, Russian diplomats have engaged with their counterparts in the United States, Japan and South Korea. Russia has also not ruled out supporting tougher international sanctions against Kim Jong-un’s regime.

TERRORISM IN PARIS: AUX ARMES, CITOYENS?

Western indecision in Syria has allowed Daesh to grow strong, and enabled it to attack Europe. The Western response must be resolute abroad, and subtle at home, if it is to defeat Islamist extremism.
Sometimes an event occurs that should create clarity of purpose and lucidity of priorities. The Paris attacks are such an event. The tragedy must galvanise European and international support for a co-ordinated offensive against Daesh. Yet questions remain about how best to deal with terrorism at home.

How the internationalisation of China’s currency could offset the global trade slowdown

The  start of 2016 has seen a tumultuous start for the global financial system. Oil prices have descended below $30 a barrel and economic developments in China have brought episodes of volatility - trading in the Shanghai Composite Index was halted twice in the first week of the year due to sharp selling.

Αποτέλεσμα εικόνας για china yuan devalued
While the slowdown in China has understandably made the markets nervous, it’s worth pointing out that with an estimated $4 trillion in foreign exchange reserves, the opening up of the Chinese financial system and the internationalisation of the renminbi (RMB) are likely to have a significant impact on the global economy.
