The Guardian: Why I published the Lagarde List.Greece gave birth to democracy. Now it has been cast out by a powerful elite

"The more laws a country has, the more corrupt it is," the Roman historian Tacitus used to say. Greece has quite a few laws. So many, in fact, that corruption can feel quite safe. An exclusive club of powerful people engages in illegal practices, then pushes through necessary laws to legalise these practices, granting itself an amnesty, and in the end, there are no media to uncover what really happened.
As I write, the adventures of an independent magazine in Greece, Hot Doc, which I edit, are being discussed worldwide. Our publication of a list of alleged Swiss bank account holders, and my subsequent arrest, has provoked a storm. But not in the Greek media. A few months ago, Reuters and the British press uncovered scandals involving Greek banks. The Greek media didn't write anything then either. The space that should have been granted to reports about these scandals was occupied by paid advertisements sponsored by the very people who caused the Greek banks to go under.

Kosovo: EU mission too expensive and inefficient

"EU brought to task over Kosovo mission," comments French daily Le Figaro, regarding a report published by the European Court of Auditors concerning the European Union's management of the Kosovo crisis. The Auditors note "modest success in contributing to the capacities of the Kosovo police" and the "lack of progress" in fighting organised crime and corruption. They also point out the coordination problems between the European Commission and EULEX, the Rule of Law Mission in Kosovo, the paper says. In short, the balance sheet shows "the limited effectiveness of EU assistance," the financial mismangement and the cruel lack of human resources of the mission, the paper notes.
Yet, Le Figaro stresses –
... on paper, the EU has gone the extra mile to support the rule of law in Pristina. Per capita, the Kosovars are the all-category champions of European aid [...] Brussels is spearheading two major operations there. One, led by the Commission, consists of traditional financial aid which has been reinforced. The other, led by the EU's diplomatic 'branch' – the EULEX mission – is responsible for, among other things, such sensitive issues as the police, the justice system and the customs service.

Erdogan Visit to Berlin Betrays Tensions

Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan and German Chancellor Angela Merkel in Berlin on Wednesday: Honest negotiations?
Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan said on Wednesday he wants Turkey to be a full member of the EU by 2023. Chancellor Angela Merkel assured him the talks would be "honest.' Their meeting in Berlin once again showed that relations between Turkey and Germany have become complicated.

At the end of the news conference Angela Merkel narrowed her eyes and pursed her lips. Her face seemed to say: What's he talking about? Next to her, Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan was talking about Cyprus. It was a mistake, he said, to allow "South Cyprus" into the European Union, and he added that the chancellor shared that view.

Euro Zone Unemployment Hit New High in September

PARIS — Euro zone unemployment set another record in September, official data showed Wednesday, with 18.49 million people out of work in a weakening economy.
The jobless rate in the 17-nation currency union ticked up to 11.6 percent from the 11.5 percent in August, as 146,000 more people were classified as unemployed, Eurostat, the statistical agency of the European Union, reported from Luxembourg. The August figure, itself already a record level, was revised upward from the 11.4 percent previously reported.
Spain, where the economy has been shellacked by a property sector collapse and government austerity measures, continues to have the highest jobless rate, at 25.8 percent. Greece, where the European sovereign debt crisisbegan, was next, at 25.1 percent in July, the most recent month for which data were available.

Credit Suisse: US Economy Will Largely Avoid Fiscal Cliff

The fiscal cliff will not choke off US growth in 2013, according to Stefan Keitel, Chief Investment Officer of Credit Suisse. Cautious optimism also for Europe. "The aggressive measures by the central banks are effective," as Keitel says in the video interview.

The most salient points (please click on the above image for the full video interview):

Long-term effectiveness of central bank measures

  • The central bank measures lower the financing costs of businesses, consumers and not
  • least also of the heavily indebted nations, and thus influence growth directly.
  • The determination evident behind the measures also has a psychological effect and strengthens trust in the markets.

US Fiscal Cliff in the US – solution independent of election results

  • The "full" fiscal cliff – i.e. the expiring tax cuts and the spending cuts – corresponds to about 4% of the 2013 US GDP.
  • A political compromise is probable and should limit the effect to 1 – 1.5% of GDP.
  • This results in a growth estimate – including various positive factors – of 2 – 2.5% for the US in 2013.

Greece Arrests the Messenger

The New York Times

Greece’s slow and cumbersome justice system moved with stunning swiftness over the weekend to arrest and charge a respected investigative journalist who published a list of prominent people with Swiss bank accounts. Contrast that with the two years that Greek tax authorities sat on that same list after the French government, which had seized it in a criminal investigation, turned it over to Greece to determine whether some of those Swiss accounts were possibly linked to tax evasion.
Swiss bank accounts are legal, but they can easily be used to avoid paying taxes. Yet a succession of Greek governments, which had pledged to increase tax revenues, failed to investigate the matter. Thanks largely to the decision by the editor Kostas Vaxevanis to publish the list in Hot Doc magazine, several former finance ministers are struggling to explain why.
