In U.S. Politics, Economic Class Speaks Loudest

New research drawn from the past half-century offers one of the clearest pictures yet of the correlation between political involvement and socioeconomics in the United States, while underscoring the significant implications of recent legal and legislative changes for marginalised groups.“From decades of data, we can say that socioeconomic status has an overwhelming impact on how politically active people are in the U.S.,” Sidney Verba, a research professor at Harvard University, said while introducing new research here in Washington on Wednesday.

“Every place we looked for what was driving inequality, we found the very central role of socioeconomic status. Even if you look at different groups that differ in their average political activity – minority groups, etc – you find that, within each group, it’s stratified by socioeconomic status.”

Παρθενική πτήση του κινεζικού J-31

Το πρωτότυπο του κινεζικού μαχητικού 5ης γενιάς J-31 πραγματοποίησε στις 31 Οκτωβρίου την παρθενική του πτήση, συνοδευόμενο από ζεύγος αεροσκαφών J-11BS (αντίγραφο των Su-27), ένα εκ των οποίων έφερε ατρακτίδιο καταγραφής της πτήσης αναρτημένο σε πτερυγικό φορέα.

 

Το αεροσκάφος κατασκευής AVIC Shenyang Aircraft Corporation (SAC) πραγματοποίησε δοκιμαστική πτήση διάρκειας 10 λεπτών κοντά στις εγκαταστάσεις της κινεζικής εταιρείας στη βορειοανατολική επαρχία Λιαονίνγκ. Το δικινητήριο αεροσκάφος εναέριας υπεροχής εκτιμάται πως έχει μήκος 16-17 μέτρων, εκπέτασμα πτερύγων 10 μέτρων και συνολική πτερυγική επιφάνεια 40 τετρ. μέτρων, διαστάσεις άμεσα συγκρίσιμες με εκείνες του αμερικανικού F-35 και σημαντικά μικρότερες του J-20 της Chengdu Aircraft Co. (CAC).

Σύμφωνα με όλες τις αναλύσεις/εκτιμήσεις η 18η Ιουνίου του 2012, θα έπρεπε να βρει την χώρα μας με κυβέρνηση η οποία να ήταν σε θέση να κυβερνήσει, δηλαδή να ήταν σε θέση – πέραν της αρχικής «ανακούφισης» που θα προσέφερε στο εσωτερικό και στο εξωτερικό η ιδέα πως στο Μέγαρο Μαξίμου θα κατοικοεδρεύσει κάποιος ο οποίος θα έχει πετύχει νωπή εντολή από τον λαό – να λάβει τις απαραίτητες αποφάσεις σε μία σειρά κορυφαίων θεμάτων τα οποία θα διαμορφώσουν της Ιστορία του τόπου αλλά και της Ευρώπης γενικότερα για τον υπόλοιπο 21ο αιώνα και ίσως περισσότερο. Ποιό όμως ήταν το σενάριο που αντιμετωπίσαμε τους πρώτους μήνες μετά τις εκλογές της 17^ης Ιουνίου;

Δυστυχώς, η πιθανότητα πως το αποτέλεσμα τη κάλπης θα δημιουργούσε μία κατάσταση απείρως χειρότερη από αυτή πριν τις εκλογές επιβεβαιώθηκε (μία απλή αναδρομή στα δημοσιεύματα/αναλύσεις του «www.defence-point.gr» πριν τις δύο εκλογικές αναμετρήσεις του Μαΐου και Ιουνίου του 2012 θα πείσει και τον πλέον δύσπιστο). Είχε τελικά σημασία το αν θα νικούσε στις εκλογές ο Αλέξης ή ο Αντώνης; Υπάρχει περίπτωση όλα όσα συζητάμε σήμερα, και αυτά που συζητούσαμε ως κοινωνία ολόκληρο το 2012 πολύ απλά να τέθηκαν σε μία λάθος βάση με αποτέλεσμα να έχουμε βρεθεί τώρα και κατόπιν εορτής προ πολύ δυσάρεστων εκπλήξεων; Ας δούμε λοιπόν μία φανταστική ιστορία (την οποία είχαμε προβάλει ως σενάριο προ ολίγων μηνών)  αχαλίνωτης πραγματικότητας…

EU puzzled by South Stream acceleration

Attempts to accelerate the Gazprom-sponsored South Stream gas pipeline project will not circumvent EU antitrust and environmental obligations, European Commission sources told EurActiv.

Sofia is expected to sign a definitive agreement with Russia's Gazprom on 9 November for building the South Stream pipeline across Bulgarian territory, according to local media.

As reported earlier, Russian President Vladimir Putin was expected to attend the ceremony that will see the deal formally signed by Alexei Miller, Gazprom CEO, and Mihail Andonov, head of the Bulgaria Energy Holding (BEH). But Sofia now indicates that the Russian President will instead visit the country in December.

France seen turning to renewables for 'ecological patriotism'

\France's government begins a review of the world's most nuclear-dependent country's energy policy on Friday (14 September), strongly in support of its small and ailing renewables sector in an effort to boost local jobs and growth.

Ministers, NGOs, unions, industries, parliamentarians and consumers will converge for a two-day conference to agree on how to conduct a six-month national debate that will seek to reshape the way energy is produced, consumed and taxed in France.

Its new Socialist government is expected to announce immediate measures to help the crisis-hit renewable energy sector – which employs 100,000 people – as part of its battle to tackle soaring unemployment.

After three years of market turbulence, Europe is laying the foundations to address the euro crisis and restart growth. Two big steps announced over the past 10 days give grounds for this hope.

First, the European Central Bank unveiled its plan to buy – in unlimited amounts – bonds of troubled euro states that are prepared to meet its conditions. Berlin Unsure about a Possible President Romney

Germans like US President Barack Obama, but what if his challenger Mitt Romney wins next week's election instead? The Republican politician is hard to read when it comes to foreign policy matters, and politicians in Berlin are asking what it would mean for German-American relations.

Germans have long since made up their minds about Mitt Romney. Only 5 percent would give him their vote if they had one, they say.

State school teachers employed by tax-avoiding firm

The BBC's 5 live Investigates programme has discovered that thousands of supply teachers working in the UK are paid by Sark-based International Subcontracting Solutions Ltd (ISS).

ISS is a payroll company - sometimes known as an "umbrella" company - which pays the salaries and expenses of workers who find jobs through recruitment agencies in the UK.

The arrangement means that temporary workers, such as supply teachers, are the employees of ISS.

Because ISS is based offshore it does not pay employer's National Insurance contributions - but neither do the UK-based recruitment agencies that find the jobs for staff paid by ISS.

An offshore company employing thousands of teachers is avoiding the payment of millions of pounds in employer's National Insurance contributions.

ISS Ltd, based in the Channel Islands, employs more than 24,000 temporary agency workers across the UK, most of them working as supply teachers.

ISS says it is "meticulous in complying with HMRC codes on taxes and expenses".

HM Revenue & Customs says schools, councils or employment agencies could be liable for the shortfall.

This could add up to many millions of pounds in unpaid tax. For example, for a supply teacher on a daily rate of £160, around £90 per week is not being paid to HMRC in employer's National Insurance contributions.

Ελληνικές αρχαιότητες σε κινεζικά ντοκιμαντέρ

Πρόκειται μάλιστα για ένα μεγάλο δίκτυο, που προβάλλει αποκλειστικά ντοκιμαντέρ, τα οποία δεν μεταδίδονται μόνον στην Κίνα (αν και αυτό από μόνο του θα έφθανε) αλλά σε όλο τον πλανήτη στην αγγλική γλώσσα μέσω δορυφόρων στην Ευρώπη, την Ασία και την Αμερική, καθώς και μέσω Ίντερνετ.
