Out-of-work engineers, family businesses that are falling apart, people working in precarious conditions in an ailing labour market – it’s a description of Spain, but it could just as easily be Portugal, Greece or Italy…
“Our consumption levels have gone way down, we’re choosier about what we eat, and we look for sales,” Esperanza tells IPS in response to a question about how her life has changed as her family’s income has shrunk in the last few years.

The sick man of Europe is France

“The German model" — Angela Merkel as Marianne, symbol of France, as seen in its town halls.
The German government is increasingly concerned as well as outspoken about France's economic situation and its inability to act. Authorities in Paris are aware of the slump in industry but nonetheless irritated by the German pressure.
We do not know if the German government discreetly tasked its five expert advisors to examine the situation of France, as the press on the other side of the Rhine has reported. The high-profile economists in the experts’ group have officially denied that any such initiative took place, while the insistence that there will be “No comment” from the Chancellor’s office nonetheless suggests that there is something to the story.

Goodbye euro, hello recession

What would happen if Germany left the euro? Economist Gustav Horn of the Hans-Böckler Foundation, which has close ties to trade unions, speculates on what would happen in the days following a German exit from the euro – and on what Germany's most popular euro-critic, Thilo Sarrazin, might also say. Excerpts.

A what-if: What would happen if Germany were to leave the euro, as the investor George Soros is calling for?
Let’s say that, by a two-thirds majority, the German Parliament votes to leave the euro and reintroduce the German mark. Only the Greens vote against it. The exchange rate is set at one to one. The Bundesbank president leaves the ECB’s Governing Council with immediate effect.

Only Dialogue Can Ease Moscow-Berlin Tensions A Commentary By Matthias Schepp in Moscow

An archive photo of Putin and Merkel: German-Russian relations are more tense than ever.
Relations between Moscow and Berlin are particularly chilly ahead of the Petersburg Dialogue, a biannual meeting of politicians, businessmen, and civil-society representatives from Russia and Germany. Both sides will have no choice but to talk, listen and swallow some uncomfortable truths.

The two sides find themselves in an absurd situation that highlights the unhealthy state of Russo-German affairs. Relations between the two are chillier than they have been at any time since October 1986, when then German Chancellor Helmut Kohl compared President Mikhail Gorbachev to Joseph Goebbels, Hitler's propaganda chief.

Ankara and Washington: What is the problem?

It seems that an unknown dynamic is creating anxiety between Turkey and the US. First, the US ambassador to Turkey, Francis Ricciardone, declared that the US government had suggested the implementation of tactics, techniques and procedures in the fight against the Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK) terrorism such as those which paved the way for the killing of Osama bin Laden. Then Ambassador Ricciardone noted that the Turkish government had rejected these proposals.
In all its details, Ricciardone's statement was somehow a serious challenge to the Turkish government, which has come under fire from the public for being weak against the PKK. After a short time, Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdoğan responded that Turkey is conducting its counterterrorism strategy on the basis of international law, thereby insinuating that the US methods are somehow illegal.

U.S. Foreign Policy: Room to Regroup

President Barack Obama has won re-election. However, in addition to all of the constraints on him that I discussed last week, he won the election with almost half the people voting against him. His win in the Electoral College was substantial -- and that's the win that really matters -- but the popular vote determines how he governs, and he will govern with one more constraint added to the others. The question is whether this weakens him or provides an opportunity. That is not determined by his policies but by the strategic situation, which, in my view, gives the United States some much-needed breathing room.
