Map: The countries most at risk for a coup in 2013

When Sen. Lamar Alexander spoke Monday at President Obama’s inauguration, he threw some healthy context into his praise of the U.S. practice of peacefully transferring power between leaders. “There is no mob, no coup, no insurrection,” he said. It’s a point so obvious, so taken for granted, that it’s almost an anachronism.

But a number of the world’s governments are still at risk of a coup. A few hours before the inauguration, it looked like one of them could be Eritrea, an East African country whose government is so authoritarian and cruel that it’s often compared to North Korea’s. Dissident soldiers seized the country’s state-run TV station, often a first step in a coup, forcing anchors to call for the release of all political prisoners (there are several thousand) before the broadcast abruptly ended. It turns out that, according to Reuters, the soldiers were likely just “low- to mid-ranking soldiers who sought a change in the constitution rather than a coup.”

Exit polls: Netanyahu, hard-line allies win narrow majority in Israeli election

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s Likud Party emerged as the largest faction in a hotly contested parliamentary election on Tuesday, positioning the hard-liner to serve a new term as prime minister, according to exit polls. But a lackluster performance by Likud, along with surprising gains by a centrist newcomer, raised the strong possibility that he will be forced to form a broad coalition.

The exit polls aired on Israel’s three major TV stations all forecast Likud along with its traditional hardline and religious allies, capturing a shaky majority of just 61 or 62 seats in the 120-member parliament. With official results trickling in throughout the night, it was possible that the two sides could end in deadlock.

Is There a Big Inflation Mystery in Greece?

Tyler Cowen confuses me:
The rates of price inflation in Greece have been running in the range of 0.8% to 2%...It’s funny how many people pretend to understand what is going on here.  If Greece were seeing a stronger bout of price deflation, the situation would be much clearer.
This seems to me to be a case of trying to find a problem where none exists.  Greece consumer prices excluding energy:

What part of the deflation is not clear?  Seems like any inflation is being driven by energy costs:

It's a smart digital world

The real and the digital worlds are converging, bringing much greater efficiency and lots of new opportunities, says Ludwig Siegele. But is it what people want?

WHAT if there were two worlds, the real one and its digital reflection? The real one is strewn with sensors, picking up everything from movement to smell. The digital one, an edifice built of software, takes in all that information and automatically acts on it. If a door opens in the real world, so does its virtual equivalent. If the temperature in the room with the open door falls below a certain level, the digital world automatically turns on the heat.

Obama the Centrist Comes Out As a Liberal

inauguration-obama-capitol-465.jpg
With his wife Michelle having already stolen the weekend with her new bangs, and his daughters Malia and Sasha a joyful vision in magenta and purple, the thin man had a job on his hands to keep up his end of the family bargain. Sensibly, he decided to stick with a conservatively cut dark suit and let his words speak for him, which they did eloquently. Unlike most inaugural speeches, Obama’s first one included, this one exceeded expectations. Cleverly constructed, pointed, and surprisingly political, it marked the emergence of a more confident, more combative Obama—a President who knows he is personally popular and who is increasingly willing to put that popularity on the line.

The Irrational Consumer: Why Economics Is Dead Wrong About How We Make Choices

A new paper reviews how psychology, biology, and neurology are ganging up on economics to prove that, when it comes to making decisions, people are anything but rational

Daniel McFadden is an economist. But his new paper, "The New Science of Pleasure," shows the many ways economics fails to explain how we make decisions -- and what it can learn from psychology, anthropology, biology, and neurology.
