Yasou: Greece Is Pulling Off an Amazing Recovery
The Social Impact of Migration and the Notion of Citizenship for the EU Ensuing challenges and opportunities for the Union
Elspeth Guild
The European Union is currently suffering a minor identity crisis. Let us hope that this
episode will pass rapidly, but for the moment it is causing headaches for civil servants
in the EU institutions and the member states as well as uncertainty and a little anxiety
among EU citizens and third-country nationals in long-term residence in the EU. The
problem is that some member states are no longer sure that all EU citizens should be treated
equally – the fundamental claim of citizenship dating from the 1789 French revolution –
while others are outraged that their citizens might be treated as less equal EU citizens than
others.
Reluctant Monetary Leaders? The New Politics of International Currencies
Will the US Dollar lose its privileged status as the
international reserve currency? Eric Helleiner doesn’t think so.
That’s because the consequences of assuming reserve currency status are
sufficiently uncertain that they might deter rival powers from pushing
their own currencies as an alternative.
The West and Russia: Why Obama's Legacy Hinges on Europe
Barack Obama has labeled Russia a
"regional power" that is acting out of weakness rather than strength.
That may be so. But the US president's own foreign policy legacy depends
heavily on Vladimir Putin -- and Europe.
Barack Obama is has a reputation for extreme rationality -- or for
being coldly calculating, depending on the viewpoint. Self-control is
paramount, and he rarely loses it. One can assume, then, that Obama's
barbed comments on Russia, delivered at a Tuesday press conference in
The Hague, were designed to provoke. They also show just how vexed the
US president is by Russian President Vladimir Putin's exploits in Crimea.

Showdown in Ukraine: Putin’s Quest for Ports, Oil, Pipelines and Gas
Yes, Russia is guilty of meddling in Ukraine, but then again so are the United States and the European Union. The major difference is that far less was said and much less reported by the international media over the Americans’ and Europeans’ interference than of Russia’s actions and the reactions it caused.
Where Russia is involved many in the West believe that one only needs to scratch the surface to see traces of the old Soviet Union begin to resurface. After all, Russian President Vladimir Putin is a former KGB officer. The truth is much more complicated than that: or perhaps somewhat simpler.
From Estonia to Azerbaijan: American Strategy After Ukraine
As I discussed last week, the fundamental problem that Ukraine poses for Russia, beyond a long-term geographical threat, is a crisis in internal legitimacy. Russian President Vladimir Putin has spent his time in power rebuilding the authority of the Russian state within Russia and the authority of Russia within the former Soviet Union. The events in Ukraine undermine the second strategy and potentially the first. If Putin cannot maintain at least Ukrainian neutrality, then the world's perception of him as a master strategist is shattered, and the legitimacy and authority he has built for the Russian state is, at best, shaken.

Whatever the origins of the events in Ukraine, the United States is now engaged in a confrontation with Russia. The Russians believe that the United States was the prime mover behind regime change in Ukraine. At the very least, the Russians intend to reverse events in Ukraine. At most, the Russians have reached the conclusion that the United States intends to undermine Russia's power. They will resist. The United States has the option of declining confrontation, engaging in meaningless sanctions against individuals and allowing events to take their course. Alternatively, the United States can choose to engage and confront the Russians.

Ukraine - Full Circle to the EU Integration Issue
The European Union and Ukraine signed a political association agreement today, after Russia took steps toward annexing Ukraine’s Crimean Peninsula, bringing us full circle to the very issue that led to the burgeoning of the Maidan protest movement and the overthrow of Ukrainian president Viktor Yanukovych in February.

The deal, signed on the sidelines of an EU summit in Brussels, brings Ukraine and the EU closer to political and economic cooperation, while the free trade portion of the deal will have to wait until Ukraine holds new presidential elections in May.

Τι το ξεχωριστό συμβαίνει με την Ελλάδα;
