Greece And The BRICS: Why The Mainstream Approach Is All Wrong

Greek PM Tsipras was invited last Monday to participate in Saint Petersburg International Economic Forum, an annual meeting held under the auspices of the President of Russia Vladimir Putin aiming -mainly- at boosting Russia’s export capacity.

The same day, Greece was invited to become the sixth member of BRICS’s New Development Bank (NDB). International and domestic media were shocked by this announcement and developed a rather criticizing approach on the possibilities of such an agreement. We will briefly explain why this is all wrong.

China’s economic rise means that the world’s largest army now also has the resources of the world’s second largest economy. The security implications of this are discussed in the U.S. Department of Defence’s latest report, which highlights not only the sheer growth of China’s military, but also its sustainability. Although China still spends less on its military than the United States spends on its own defense forces, China’s far higher economic growth suggests it will be able to catch-up rapidly, with relatively little economic burden. This contrasts with America’s economic malaise and raises questions over the credibility of the U.S. security guarantees to Western Pacific allies and its pivot to Asia.

Ο Δρόμος του Μεταξιού της Κίνας προς το πουθενά;

Από το 2013, η Κίνα έχει δημοσιοποιήσει το σχέδιό της για το Νέο Δρόμο του Μεταξιού. Ξεκίνησε μια μαζική εκστρατεία δημοσίων σχέσεων, η οποία αφήνει ακόμη ανοικτό και το ενδεχόμενο του «Τουριστικού Δρόμου του Μεταξιού», για να μετατρέψει την ιδέα ενός παγκόσμιου δικτύου μεταφοράς σε κίνητρο για συνεργασία με την Κίνα και την έκφραση μιας ασιατικής «κοινότητας του πεπρωμένου». Αλλά η Κίνα θα αντιμετωπίσει τεράστιες προκλήσεις στην προσπάθειά της να μετατρέψει το Νέο Δρόμο του Μεταξιού σε πραγματικότητα. Ένα από τα μέρη όπου η Κίνα είχε αρχίσει την ανακατασκευή του αρχαίου Δρόμου του Μεταξιού βρίσκεται κοντά στο Πακιστάν. Αλλά μετά από δεκαετίες, η πρόοδος ήταν περιορισμένη. Παρά τη δέσμευση της Κίνας για το σχέδιο του Δρόμου του Μεταξιού, δεν είναι ξεκάθαρο αν θα οδηγήσει κάπου. 

US trade deficit soars to six-year high: Signal or noise?

With the US trade deficit at a six-year high, analysts have attributed the widening gap to a strong appreciation of the US dollar coupled with labor strikes at ports along the California coast. Is the rising deficit a true economic signal, or just noise?

Last week saw a perfect storm for US trade as the Department of Commerce reported the highest trade deficit since October 2008. The trade deficit ballooned by 43% in the month of March, making it the biggest month-to-month jump in 18 years.

And what’s the best way to show your friends that you’ve got their back? Sell them billions of dollars worth of advanced weapons. In fact, it seems like arms sales are the Obama administration’s tool of choice these days for dealing with everything from counterterrorism to a lagging economy. And the consequences, unsurprisingly, are bloody.

Το ρίσκο έχει αυξηθεί σε ό, τι αφορά την συνάντηση μεταξύ του προέδρου των ΗΠΑ, Μπαράκ Ομπάμα, και των ηγετών του Κόλπου στο Καμπ Ντέιβιντ σήμερα 14 Μαΐου. Παρόλο που οι συνομιλίες στοχεύουν στην ενίσχυση της συνεργασίας μεταξύ ΗΠΑ και Κόλπου, υπάρχει μεγάλος κίνδυνος αποτυχίας της συνόδου κορυφής. Η Ουάσιγκτον θα κάνει μεγάλο λάθος αν δεν προτείνει μια σημαντική αναβάθμιση των σχέσεων ασφάλειας με τους εταίρους της στον Κόλπο, που να είναι τόσο τολμηρή και στρατηγικά σημαντική όσο η μελλοντική πυρηνική συμφωνία με την Τεχεράνη -αλλά αυτή φαίνεται να είναι η ακριβής πορεία που θα ακολουθήσει πιθανότατα ο Ομπάμα.

Σχέδιο για το μεταναστευτικό βάσει ελληνικής πρότασης

Μια ιδιαίτερα τολμηρή και φιλόδοξη πρόταση για το μεταναστευτικό ζήτημα της Ευρώπης παρουσίασε, χθες, στην έδρα της Ευρωπαϊκής Επιτροπής στις Βρυξέλλες, ο αρμόδιος επίτροπος, Δημήτρης Αβραμόπουλος (αριστερά), μαζί με τον αντιπρόεδρο της Ευρωπαϊκής Επιτροπής, Φρανς Τίμερμανς (κέντρο), και την ύπατη εκπρόσωπο, Φεντερίκα Μογκερίνι (δεξιά).

Μια ιδιαίτερα τολμηρή και φιλόδοξη πρόταση για το μεταναστευτικό ζήτημα της Ευρώπης παρουσίασε χθες ο αρμόδιος επίτροπος, Δημήτρης Αβραμόπουλος, αφού είχε λάβει την ομόφωνη θετική ψήφο από το Κολέγιο των Επιτρόπων νωρίτερα το πρωί. Το σχέδιο είναι θετικό κυρίως για τις χώρες του Νότου και ιδιαίτερα για όσες καλούνται άμεσα να αντιμετωπίσουν μεταναστευτικές ροές, όπως η Ελλάδα, η Ιταλία και η Μάλτα, καθώς για πρώτη φορά προτείνεται η ανακατανομή στο εσωτερικό της Ε.Ε. μεταναστών αιτουμένων άσυλο, ώστε να μειωθεί η πίεση που ασκείται στα άνω κράτη-μέλη.

Who Is The Biggest Player In Energy?

PetroChina (NYSE: PTR) just surpassed Exxon Mobil (NYSE: XOM) to become the largest energy company in the world, on a market cap basis.

PetroChina was able to accomplish this despite Exxon’s growth of 1.5 billion barrels of oil equivalent (BOE) in reserves. These new reserves are located at the Permian Basin in West Texas and the Kearl Oil Sands project in Canada.
