The Coup in Chile

What happened in Chile on September 11, 1973 did not suddenly reveal anything new about the ways in which men of power and privilege seek to protect their social order: the history of the last 150 years is spattered with such episodes.

Even so, Chile has at least forced upon many people on the Left some uncomfortable reflections and questions about the “strategy” which is appropriate in Western-type regimes for what is loosely called the “transition to socialism.”

Labour leadership: Jeremy Corbyn elected with huge mandate

Jeremy Corbyn has been elected leader of the British Labour party, in a stunning first-round victory that dwarfed even the mandate for Tony Blair in 1994.

He won with nearly 59.5% of first-preference votes, beating rivals Andy Burnham, who trailed on 19%, and Yvette Cooper who received 17%. The “Blairite” candidate Liz Kendall came last on 4.5%.

How Low Will Erdogan Go?

On June 7, Turkish voters went to the polls and denied President Recep Tayyip Erdogan’s Justice and Development Party (the AKP) a governing majority for the first time in over a decade. It appeared the AKP would have to negotiate with other political parties to build a coalition government — a clear setback for Erdogan, who hoped to use an electoral victory to consolidate his increasingly authoritarian rule. Yet the elation among those worried what Erdogan’s success would mean for Turkish democracy quickly turned to despair. Over the course of the summer, commentators went from celebrating a “carnival of pluralism and liberalism” to declaring more recently that Turkey was “on the road to Armageddon.”

Παρατηρώντας την από την Ουάσιγκτον, η σύγκρουση στην ανατολική Ουκρανία φαίνεται να έχουν φτάσει σε ένα επίπεδο σταθεροποίησης. Παρά τις διάφορες συμφωνίες κατάπαυσης του πυρός, οι μάχες στην πρώτη γραμμή δεν έπαψαν ποτέ εντελώς. Ωστόσο, η ένταση της βίας έχει μειωθεί σημαντικά, και ο ρωσικός στρατός και οι αυτονομιστές σύμμαχοί του δεν έχουν ξεκινήσει μια μεγάλη επίθεση σε διάστημα έξι μηνών. Ένα τέτοιο αποτέλεσμα, ισχυρίστηκε το μέλος της Γερμανικής Ομοσπονδιακής Βουλής Rolf Mützenich σε ένα κείμενό του τον Φεβρουάριο [2] στο Foreign Affairs, θα πρέπει να ικανοποιεί την Δύση.

Η διπλή προσφυγική κρίση της Ευρώπης

Η Ευρώπη αισθάνεται υπό πολιορκία. Κάθε ημέρα φέρνει νέες ανησυχητικές εικόνες απελπισμένων προσφύγων που προσπαθούν να περάσουν στην ΕΕ, με οποιοδήποτε τρόπο. Αλλά η ΕΕ φαίνεται ανίκανη να αντιδράσει ενιαία. Οι εντάσεις μεταξύ των κρατών-μελών φαίνεται να αυξάνονται διότι το πρόβλημα είναι τόσο διαφορετικό από τη μία χώρα στην άλλη. Σε κατά κεφαλή βάση, η Σουηδία λαμβάνει 15 φορές περισσότερες αιτήσεις ασύλου από ό,τι το Ηνωμένο Βασίλειο (όπου η επίσημη πολιτική παραμένει εξαιρετικά εχθρική) και η Γερμανία έχει τώρα γίνει ο κύριος συνολικά στόχος, λαμβάνοντας το 40% του συνόλου των αιτήσεων της ΕΕ. Ακόμη και σε κατά κεφαλήν βάση, αυτό είναι αρκετές φορές περισσότερο από το μέσο όρο της ΕΕ.

The expected upcoming visit of President Xi Jimping to Washington offers an interesting opportunity to assess the development of Obama’s policy toward China. Characterised by American wishes to see Beijing play a greater role in the world affairs, the trip will also shaping a diplomatic framework based on a new model of Major Power Relations.

Greece between Russia and the United States: The Syria-bound flights

On September 6, Washington asked Athens to close airspace to Syria-bound Russian aid flights. Earlier the same day, Kremlin requested and received Athens permission to transport humanitarian aid to Syria for the period between September 1-24.  A quagmire for the interim government in Greece?

A truly hard and complex decision was made by the interim government in Athens which essentially has no full authorization to deal with such delicate political and strategic decisions. Nevertheless, the Greek Ministry of Foreign Affairs responded negatively to US request.  This decision will go without repercussions for the Greek side, but it is meaningful of how both the US and Russia are planning to employ their influence on the surrounding and neighboring countries,  as well to the biggest reception and first transit states for refugees, like Greece.

7 Middle East crises that are a bigger problem than Iran’s nuclear program

The Obama administration secured vital support for the Iran deal this week, after it emerged that at least 42 senators endorsed the proposed agreement, announced in July in Vienna at a summit between Iran and world powers. The White House likely won't have to veto a congressional bill aimed against it, meaning the pact's smooth passage is now more or less a fait accompli.

That, of course, doesn't mean the rancorous debate over the rights and wrongs of the deal will end. The threat of Tehran's nuclear program has seemingly sucked up all the foreign policy oxygen in Washington in recent months and will stalk the election campaign in the months ahead, beginning with a Donald Trump-Ted Cruz rally on Wednesday in the capital.
