Κατά πάσα πιθανότητα, ο περασμένος μήνας θα μείνει στην ιστορία ως ένα σημείο καμπής στο ευρωπαϊκό μεταναστευτικό δράμα. Η Γερμανία, για τους πρόσφυγες από την Συρία έχει ουσιαστικά αναστείλει Δουβλίνο ΙΙ, την Συνθήκη της ΕΕ που υποχρεώνει τους αιτούντες άσυλο να εγγράφονται στην πρώτη ευρωπαϊκή χώρα στην οποία φθάνουν. Εν τω μεταξύ, έχει υποσχεθεί να μην περιορίσει τον αριθμό των προσφύγων που δέχεται, προκαλώντας άλλες ευρωπαϊκές χώρες να την ακολουθήσουν.

Σε όλη την Ευρώπη, η ξαφνική γενναιοδωρία της Γερμανίας συγκρίνεται μόνο από αυτήν του ευρύτερου κοινού, από τους ποδοσφαιρικούς συλλόγους μέχρι τους ιδιώτες, οι οποίοι έχουν δώσει τρόφιμα, ρουχισμό και στέγη αξίας εκατομμυρίων ευρώ. The Conflict in Yemen: A Case Study of Iran’s Limited Power

The nuclear agreement with Iran has sparked much concern about the financial resources Iran will have at its disposal once the sanctions are lifted. Most experts agree that the agreement has not prompted Iran to change its fundamental political or ideological approach and that it will continue to support its regional proxies, try to expand its sphere of influence in the Middle East, oppose the influence of the United States and the West in the region, and continue to show extreme hostility toward Israel. Presumably, then, Iran will use its newfound resources to promote these aims. Nonetheless, the case of Yemen shows that the forces opposing Iran – the Sunni coalition, the US and its allies, and even Israel – have the tools to confront the possible ramifications of the nuclear agreement. These reasons make it important to maintain an ongoing, in-depth dialogue about cooperation and coordination to contain Iran and limit its influence. 

Does Putin Have a Plan for Syria?

There is no doubt that Russia is stepping up its military presence in Syria in support of President Bashar al-Assad. A Sept. 9 Reuters report documented Russian forces participating in military operations in Syria. Photo evidence published in a Daily Mail report suggests that Russian troops have been on the ground in Syria at least since April. Other reports of Moscow’s increased military buildup there have mentioned additional deliveries of advanced weaponry to the Assad regime, a military advance team, and prefabricated housing units sent to an airfield near Latakia. A new satellite image obtained by Foreign Policy confirms the scale of the construction to accommodate additional Russian troops and aircraft. If there was any doubt about who’s fueling this war, now Moscow reportedly plans to supply Assad with an annual 200,000 tons of liquefied petroleum gas through Kerch, a port in the Crimean peninsula, which Russia annexed from Ukraine in March 2014.

The battle for reform in Kyiv

The whole ship shudders and seems to lurch sideways. Metal cabinets rattle. Californians swear it sounds and feels just like an earthquake, with deep rumbling booms and tremors. Others say it’s like hitting turbulence on a jetliner, the shivering and rattling accompanied by the overdrive whine of 30,000 horsepower. If you’re down in the galley, right on the waterline, what you hear is the nerve-wracking scraping of shattered ice along the side. Five stories up, on top of the bridge, you feel the bump of the collision over the strain of the engines pushing the ship through a sea of drifting white, blue, and dirty gray ice.
