President Putin calls NATO relic of Cold War
Russian President Vladimir Putin has called NATO as an atavism of the Cold War, saying that it is difficult to understand why an organization such as "NATO should be existing today".
"Why it (NATO) still exists in modern times, is just not clear. It is to a significant extent a throwback to the times of the Cold War…," DPA quoted the Russian President Vladimir Putin as saying at a Russian-leased base in Tajikistan on Friday.
"…I have always believed that NATO is a Cold War atavism. It was set up at a time, when there was a bipolar system in international relations. Today, that situation has changed, therefore, it is hard to justify …why …NATO should be existing today,” the president added.
Moscow concerned about Turkey-Syria border conflict: Russian FM
Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov says Moscow is concerned about the “deteriorating” situation on the border between Syria and Turkey.
“As far as the incident between Syria and Turkey goes, it is of great concern for us. The situation is deteriorating with every coming day,” Lavrov said at a press conference during a visit to the Pakistani capital Islamabad on Thursday.
On Wednesday, a Syrian mortar strike killed five people in the southeastern Turkish town of Akcakale in Sanliurfa province.
Food prices to stay high, volatility may increase: FAO
"Prices are sustained. It is highly unlikely we will see a normalisation of prices anytime soon," said Abdolreza Abbassian, senior economist at FAO.
ROME: Food prices are set to remain high and volatility in food markets could increase in coming months, a senior economist at the U.N.'s Food and Agriculture Organisation told Reuters on Thursday.
"Prices are sustained. It is highly unlikely we will see a normalisation of prices anytime soon," said Abdolreza Abbassian, senior economist at FAO.
"Volatility is not going to go away, if anything it may even intensify further in coming months," he said.
Meanwhile, global food prices rose by 1.4 per cent in September due to strengthening of cereals, dairy and meat prices, FAO said today.
"Following two months of stability, the FAO Food Price Index rose slightly in September 2012, up 1.4 per cent, or 3 points, from its level in August," FAO said in a statement.
FAO's Food Price Index (FFPI) is a monthly measure of change in international prices of 55 commodities.
"The rise reflected strengthening dairy and meat prices and more contained increases for cereals. Prices of sugar and oils, on the other hand, fell," it added.

Syria: Europe’s unsustainable strategic weakness
The impotence of the EU faced with the drama in Syria reflects the lack of a credible European foreign policy. But this can only come about if the European Union gets a real armed force of its own. Excerpts.
Aleppo, Damascus. Bodies strewn in the streets, gutted neighbourhoods, indiscriminate shelling. Unbearable stories and images that take us straight back to the darkest hours of Sarajevo and Grozny. The killing of whole cities. And no one seems to lift a finger.
The United States is in the midst of an election campaign. As for the Europeans, they couldn’t intervene even if they wanted to.

Facebook.
In Libya, contingency plan seemed to go awry during attack on U.S. outpost
Amid the chaos of the attack on the U.S. mission in this coastal city last month, neither the militia charged with guarding the compound nor Americandiplomats appeared to follow plans for what to do under assault, according to Libyan officials and guards, as well as documents found in the wreckage.
In addition, at least three Libyan guards hired to defend the compound said in interviews that they had met with American officials to express concerns about lax security, and two said they had done so on Sept. 11, the day of the attack.
