Greece's Economic Future 'Uncertain,' Creditors Say

BRUSSELS—Greece's international creditors acknowledged that all isn't well with the country's mammoth bailout program Monday as their representatives issued a statement saying the outlook for the critically ailing economy is "uncertain," even as they said progress has been made on reforms.

Greece: Victim Of A Severe ‘Dutch Disease’

“Internationally tradable” goods can be transported and consumed away from where they are produced according to the real “comparative advantage” of each country, at the “efficient frontier”, along the supply curve of the global economy (which could be the “cost-efficient frontier” for Bangladesh clothing industry or the “technological frontier” for US internet companies). Internationally non-tradable goods and services can be consumed only in the vicinity of the point of their production and, therefore, their price is determined locally. The Greek economy contracted by 25% since 2008, unemployment soared to 27% and Greece appears as an outlier in the eurozone crisis. In our view the nosediving GDP, apart from being critical for its debt sustainability, should be explained by referring to the buildup of a large structural imbalance between the tradables and the non-tradables sectors of the Greek economy. The distinction between internationally tradables and non-tradables presents important interest as regards the current structural-economic crisis of Greece.

Not quite a coup, but pretty much

As I sat down for my interview with the journalist to discuss the protests of June 30, I told him, "You realize by the time we're done, half of this is probably going to be irrelevant and outdated, right?" It turns out I was right -- because within those few minutes, the Egyptian Defense Minister, General el-Sissi issued an ultimatum. The official text was quite clear: it was a message for all parties in Egypt to address their differences, and respond to the "will of the people" within 48 hours. Within a few minutes, I received a message from a senior member of the Muslim Brotherhood -- and it was a fairly short one. "We have a coup." Not quite -- but he may yet turn out to be right.

Don't let England's poujadists kill London's golden goose

One of the UK’s key economic advantages is its success at attracting skilled immigrants. In particular, the ability of London to generate the wealth that Britain depends on to finance its public services is inextricably linked to the city’s openness to ideas, capital and immigrants. But Britain’s immigration debate is now all about how to make it harder for newcomers rather than making the country more attractive to them. To a large extent, this is being driven by the concerns and fears of suburban and rural voters, especially older ones. The readiness of politicians from across the political spectrum to pander to these fears is damaging the economy, feeding euroscepticism and with it the possibility of the UK quitting the EU. Don't let England's poujadists kill London's golden goose
The government wants to reduce net immigration to less than 100,000 a year. To this end it has tightened up the regime for student visas and for skilled immigration into the UK from outside the EU (non-EU countries account for two-thirds of the net immigration: the EU the remainder). There is little the government can do about EU immigrants, which explains the increasingly hysterical campaign to reduce their access to benefits. The government argues that the scale of immigration is prejudicing the employment prospects of lower-skilled British workers (over the last year more than half of new jobs went to immigrants, and youth unemployment is at a record high, ergo they are taking British jobs); placing a further burden on an already overwhelmed National Health Service (NHS) and school system; and leading to abuse of the country’s welfare system.

In Egypt, gripes about U.S. government are a common theme

There is little that the angry supporters of the Muslim Brotherhood have in common with the secular, liberal revelers in Tahrir Square these days — except for one thing.

They both believe the U.S. government is conspiring against them.
