On the face of it, it is much better to be looking for work in the U.S. than in Europe. U.S. unemployment in January, seasonally adjusted, fell to 6.6%. In the euro zone, the latest figures put unemployment at close to double that—12%.

Η εξωτερική πολιτική ξανά στην ατζέντα της ΕΕ

Η εξωτερική πολιτική είναι ξανά στην ευρωπαϊκή ατζέντα. Δύο υψηλού προφίλ επιτυχίες –στο Κοσσυφοπέδιο και στο Ιράν- αποτελούν ένα ισχυρό παράδειγμα για το πώς η Ευρώπη μπορεί να πετύχει αξιοσημείωτα αποτελέσματα όταν τα κράτη-μέλη και οι ευρωπαϊκοί θεσμοί δουλεύουν από κοινού.  Και τα δύο επιτεύγματα είναι αποτέλεσμα μιας μακράς διαδικασίας που ξεκίνησε πριν από χρόνια. Η έκδοση του ECFR Scorecard για το 2014 εμφανίζει επίσης –εκτός από αυτές τις επιτυχίες- ότι η Ευρώπη δυσκολεύτηκε να σταθεροποιήσει την ίδια της τη γειτονιά. Η κρίση στη Συρία επιδεινώθηκε, η πολιτική γειτονίας της ΕΕ παρέμεινε αναποτελεσματική σε χώρες όπως η Αίγυπτος, και η Ευρώπη βρέθηκε να είναι σε όλο και μεγαλύτερη αντιπαράθεση με τη Ρωσία.



Η τέταρτη ετήσια έκδοση του «Πίνακα Ευρωπαϊκής Εξωτερικής Πολιτικής» του ECFR, εξετάζει 66 επιμέρους πτυχές της ευρωπαϊκής εξωτερικής πολιτικής σε έξι βασικούς τομείς: σχέσεις με τις ΗΠΑ, την Κίνα, τη Ρωσία, την Ευρύτερη Ευρώπη, τη Μέση Ανατολή/Βόρεια Αφρική και τις επιδόσεις της Ευρώπης σε πολυμερείς οργανισμούς και στη διαχείριση κρίσης. Οι συγγραφείς απένειμαν επίσης βαθμούς για τη συνολική απόδοση και ονοματίζουν μεμονωμένες χώρες ως «Leaders» ή «Slackers», αναλόγως με το εάν ηγήθηκαν ή παρεμπόδισαν την ικανότητα της Ευρώπης να πετύχει τα συμφέροντά της σε συγκεκριμένους στόχους.

This Week in Energy: April D-Day for Alaska’s Massive Gas Plans

Alaska stands at an interesting energy crossroads, with the State Legislature considering the fate of a massive liquefied natural gas project that would be an economic boost for the state and a new supply boost for Asian markets hungry for US LNG. The State Legislature session ends on 20 April and approval is by no means a foregone conclusion: Some Alaskan lawmakers don’t like the deal, which they say panders to oil companies at the expense of the state.

The project will cost between $45 billion and $65 billion and is backed by giants Exxon Mobil, BP and ConocoPhillips. It envisions transporting Alaskan North Slope gas 800 miles across the state to a new LNG plant on the south coast. The pipeline project is hoping to be green-lighted in full in 2018, but first it has to get past the state legislature. As the plan stands now, the state will take a 20-25% stake in the project and as such foot the bill for $10 billion of the project’s cost, with TransCanada potentially putting up half that amount.
