Student Movements: A Subject of Human Geography

As student protests in Hong Kong continue, memories of the 1989 Tiananmen Square demonstrations naturally spring to mind. Less iconic but no less notable were the Hungarian Revolution of 1956, which began as a student movement; the 2007 Venezuelan protests, which started with a group of students demanding constitutional reform; and the 1929 protests in Paris, which challenged the role of churches in education.

Of course, each student movement is unique; the one underway in Hong Kong concerns Hong Kong affairs, not widespread democratic reform in China proper. And yet all such movements share characteristics that transcend borders, making them an ideal phenomenon through which to study geopolitics.

Greek officials have told the International Monetary Fund (IMF) that the debt-stricken country can quit its multibillion-dollar rescue programme more than a year early after meeting the body’s managing director in Washington on Sunday.

The Dutch Pension Plan

Imagine a place where pensions were not an ever-deepening quagmire, where the numbers told the whole story and where workers could count on a decent retirement.

Why History Should Replace Economics in the 21st Century

Why History Should Replace Economics in the 21st Century

Fifty years ago, historians advised politicians and policy-makers. They helped chart the future of nations, by helping leaders learn from past mistakes in history. But then something changed, and we began making decisions based on economic principles rather than historical ones. The results were catastrophic.

Did Israel's 'Hannibal Directive' Lead to a War Crime in Gaza?

The July-August war in Gaza drew international condemnation for a number of reasons, but one episode proved more deadly than any other: an Israeli air and artillery bombardment on Aug. 1 that killed 150 people in a matter of hours.
Six weeks on from the war, with the toll of destruction still being counted, there is deepening unease about what took place that day, especially over whether too much force was used. Some legal experts say a war crime may have been committed.

Russia: Between Empire and Modernity

Russian President Vladimir Putin’s annexation of the Crimea and the shadow war in Ukraine is the most important geopolitical event in Europe since the end of the Cold War. Putin is widely seen in the West now as a gangster-like figure, obsessed with Cold War-era grudges, and unwilling to allow the ex-Soviet Union’s “near abroad” to find their own post-Cold War path. Putin would seem to prefer the countries around him be failed states, whose weakness opens them to Russian manipulation, rather than modernizers, moving, however haltingly, to democracy, non-corrupt capitalism, and association with Western governments and values. Were Russia’s immediate neighbors to move toward the European norm, as much of Eastern Europe has since 1990, it would be harder for Russia to bully them, and that bullying would attract global attention.

Japan and China seeking a limited truce?

Even though Prime Minister Shinzo Abe has been travelling widely across continents to bolster Japan's diplomatic reach, he is sorely aware that he is not in a position to achieve any breakthrough in Tokyo's relations with its immediate neighbouring countries China, South Korea and Russia. This is a major source of concern for policy- makers in the Japanese Government.
In a bid to achieve some semblance of normality with China in particular, the Abe administration has undertaken several attempts to revive official talks at the highest level, either directly or on the sidelines of some regional or international forums.
