The American Public's Indifference to Foreign Affairs

Last week, several events took place that were important to their respective regions and potentially to the world. Russian government officials suggested turning Ukraine into a federation, following weeks of renewed demonstrations in Kiev. The Venezuelan government was confronted with violent and deadly protests. Kazakhstan experienced a financial crisis that could have destabilized the economies of Central Asia. Russia and Egypt inked a significant arms deal. Right-wing groups in Europe continued their political gains.
Any of these events had the potential to affect the United States. At different times, lesser events have transfixed Americans. This week, Americans seemed to be indifferent to all of them. This may be part of a cycle that shapes American interest in public affairs. The decision to raise the debt ceiling, which in the last cycle gripped public attention, seemed to elicit a shrug.

Europe in 25 Years

What Europe will look like in 25 years from now may well be determined earlier than that. Let’s fast forward to late March 2017, the 60th anniversary of the treaty of Rome that established the European Economic Community. On March 25th, 38 European leaders are gathering in Rome, 28 of them from EU countries and 10 more from Norway, Switzerland, Serbia, Bosnia, Albania, Iceland, Northern Macedonia, Turkey, Montenegro and Kosovo. The EU leaders are there to sign a new European treaty while others are negotiating the final stages of EU membership and therefore express their intention to sign the treaty upon accession before 2025.

Taking Stock of Labor Markets on Both Sides of the Atlantic

On the face of it, it is much better to be looking for work in the U.S. than in Europe. U.S. unemployment in January, seasonally adjusted, fell to 6.6%. In the euro zone, the latest figures put unemployment at close to double that—12%.

That is in part due to the better economic performance of the U.S., which resumed growth in 2009 after a recession induced by the financial crash. The euro zone, meanwhile, languished in a sovereign-debt crisis.

Monnet's Brandy and Europe's fate

Strobe Talbott
Money is an instrument of governance as well as commerce. It enables citizens to participate in the economic life of their societies while reminding them where political authority resides and where their loyalties belong. So it has been since ancient times, when visages of Nebuchadnezzar and Caesar were stamped on the coins of their realms, and so it is today. In almost all 195 countries on Earth, the change in people’s pockets and the banknotes in their wallets are an assertion of national sovereignty.
