Erdogan’s Kurdish Electoral Gamble Will Reverberate in Turkey and Iraq

On Sunday, Turkey’s ruling Justice and Development Party (AKP) under Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan racked up an astounding victory in municipal elections. The party’s success came despite waves of civil unrest last year, the economy taking a downturn, daily revelations about corruption in the highest echelons of government and a crackdown on online media. There are many political and socio-economic reasons for the AKP’s dominance, but in Turkey’s Kurdish southeast, Erdogan was able to count on one unexpected campaigner on his behalf: the president of the Kurdish autonomous region in Iraq, Massoud Barzani.

Ukraine crisis: How Vladimir Putin is winning the psychological war

As it emerges that the promised partial withdrawal of Russian troops from the Ukrainian border has not taken place, Western powers are reduced to awaiting Moscow's next move.

More than a century ago, Lenin told his fellow revolutionaries that demoralising the enemy by “issuing the first agitational leaflet” amounted to waging war by other means.

It’s been a while, thankfully, since the eurozone was in full-blown meltdown mode. But there’s still plenty of slow-burning economic misery in the common currency area.

Has Obamacare Turned the Corner?

Reuters

The big Obamacare deadline has passed, and Democrats are exultant. Monday was the last day to enroll for 2014 coverage under the Affordable Care Act, and more than 7 million Americans—7,041,000, according to White House Press Secretary Jay Carney—have signed up for health insurance through the federal and state insurance exchanges. That exceeds the original goal the government had set for first-year enrollment (which had been lowered to 6 million when the website proved disastrously unfunctional).

German Defense Minister Ursula von der Leyen has demanded a stronger NATO presence in Eastern Europe. But that makes some in Chancellor Merkel's government uncomfortable. As the alliance moves to reassure eastern allies, Berlin considers its options.

Russia and the United States Negotiate the Future of Ukraine

During the Cold War, U.S. secretaries of state and Soviet foreign ministers routinely negotiated the outcome of crises and the fate of countries. It has been a long time since such talks have occurred, but last week a feeling of deja vu overcame me. Americans and Russians negotiated over everyone's head to find a way to defuse the crisis in Ukraine and, in the course of that, shape its fate.

During the talks, U.S. President Barack Obama made it clear that Washington has no intention of expanding NATO into either Ukraine or Georgia. The Russians have stated that they have no intention of any further military operations in Ukraine. Conversations between Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov and U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry have been extensive and ongoing. For different reasons, neither side wants the crisis to continue, and each has a different read on the situation.

French Voters Shift to the Right in Mayoral Elections

French voters dealt a blow to the government of François Hollandeon Sunday, rejecting left-leaning candidates for local office in at least 155 cities while embracing more conservative politicians, including, in a handful of races, the extreme-right National Front party.
One bright spot for Mr. Hollande was in Paris, where Anne Hidalgo, the Socialist Party candidate, was elected mayor, becoming the first woman to serve in that job and one of a still small cadre of female mayors of large cities.
