Τα μέσα μαζικής ενημέρωσης αγνόησαν σε μεγάλο βαθμό την έναρξη της Ευρασιατικής Οικονομικής Ένωσης (EEU) την 1η Ιανουαρίου, και η EEU θεωρείται ευρέως ότι έχει κάνει μια άσχημη αρχή μέχρι τώρα, καθώς η Ρωσία, ο κύριος μοχλός της Ένωσης, μπαίνει σε μια οικονομική κρίση. Ποιο θα είναι το μέλλον αυτού του νέου μορφώματος; Θα επιβιώσει της ρωσικής κρίσης; Θα οδηγήσει σε πραγματική οικονομική ολοκλήρωση; Θα προχωρήσει πιο πέρα από την οικονομία για να γίνει μια πολιτική ομοσπονδία; Πώς θα σχετιστεί η EEU με τους γείτονές της στην Ανατολή και την Δύση, την Κίνα και την ΕΕ;

Η κίνηση αυτή είναι γνωστή ως Πατριώτες Ευρωπαίοι Εναντίον τού Εξισλαμισμού τής Δύσης (Patriotic Europeans Against the Islamization of the West) ή Pegida, και αυτή την εβδομάδα προσέλκυσαν περισσότερους υποστηρικτές από ποτέ -υπολογίζονται στους 25.000- στους δρόμους τής Δρέσδης.

China’s Most Rotten: A Rogue’s Gallery

China’s Most Rotten: A Rogue’s Gallery
In story after story about China’s corrupt cadres, state media describes loot reminiscent of Aladdin’s cave. The reporting is often luridly detailed, part of a propaganda push underscoring the successes of the sweeping anti-corruption campaign launched by President Xi Jinping shortly after he ascended to power in November 2012. There was the coal sector bureaucrat busted in May 2014 who hoarded a record-breaking $33 million in cash at home, and the low-level water supply official detained in February 2014 who hid 81 pounds of gold and deeds to 68 properties. In the Chinese People’s Liberation Army (PLA), its armed services, there was the general who was charged in March 2014 after being caught with 20 crates of fancy liquor, a gold boat, and a gold Chairman Mao statue. The staggering volume of wealth and luxe objects reported in many Chinese graft cases suggests a ruling elite not only riddled with corruption, but one also troubled by a collective hoarding disorder. State-run China Business News reported that when Ma Junfei, a railway official in Inner Mongolia’s capital of Hohhot in northern China, was detained for graft in December 2013, he told authorities that his “biggest headache” had been trying to figure out where to hide all the cash he received.

Europe Rediscovers Nationalism

In his latest novel, French writer Michel Houellebecq presents a controversial situation: The year is 2022, and France has become an Islamicized country where universities have to teach the Koran, women have to wear the veil and polygamy is legal. The book, which created a stir in France, went on sale Jan. 7. That day, a group of terrorists killed 12 people at the headquarters of French satirical magazine Charlie Hebdo.

Also on Jan. 7, German Chancellor Angela Merkel met British Prime Minister David Cameron in London. Although the formal reason for the meeting was to discuss the upcoming G-7 summit, the two leaders also discussed Cameron's proposals to limit migration in Europe. Finally, a much less publicized event took place in Germany that day: A group of politicians from the Euroskeptic Alternative for Germany party met with members of Pegida, the anti-Islam protest group that has staged large protests in Dresden and minor protests in other German cities.

A Financially Stressed Rouhani Takes On His Opponents

The coming week will be an important one for Iran's relations with the United States. With just six weeks to go before the deadline in the nuclear negotiations, Iranian Foreign Minister Javad Zarif will travel to Geneva to meet with U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry on Jan. 14. The two will discuss ways to speed up the negotiating process, and then U.S. and Iranian negotiating teams will spend Jan. 15-17 working out technical details of the agreement. Finally, on Jan. 18, Iran will meet with the permanent members of the U.N. Security Council and Germany to round out this stage of the negotiation.
While a final agreement may not be around the corner, it is obvious that both sides are taking these talks very seriously. Skeptics of the negotiations have long warned that Iran is simply using the talks to drag out the negotiation process to build political cover and buy more time for its nuclear program, but the behavior of the Hassan Rouhani government suggests it is committed to reaching a deal. However, Tehran will need to overcome several obstacles standing in the way of reaching a long-term agreement.

Back To Basics: Why Conventional Drilling Makes Sense in 2015

This New Year, an old trend may become a new trend as conventional drilling in North America is once again in the spotlight at a time when oil prices continue their slump and the unconventional becomes increasingly uneconomical.
Back To Basics: Why Conventional Drilling Makes Sense in 2015
Advanced horizontal drilling and hydraulic fracking for extraction is much more expensive than conventional drilling. While these high-cost methods are the technology that ushered in the North American shale boom, in times of oil price troubles, plenty are moving back to the basics. Unexplored conventional plays are set for a mini-boom of their own.

The Good, Bad, and Ugly of Plunging Oil Prices

Crude oil prices plunged to a six-year low Tuesday in a potentially painful threat to oil-exporting nations that rely on crude to power their economies. The drop brings some welcome relief to countries that have been struggling with economic headwinds, but brings a mixed bag for others, like the United States, that are both big producers and consumers of oil.
The Good, Bad, and Ugly of Plunging Oil Prices
Oil prices are still looking for a floor, in part because the persistent mismatch between global supply and demand continues even as big oil producers inside OPEC keep spooking the market by refusing to countenance any voluntary production cut. The energy minister for the United Arab Emirates on Tuesday, Jan. 13, dismissed the idea that OPEC would cut production to boost prices and said it was up to other oil suppliers, such as the United States, to blink first.
