Top Syrian Journalist Claims Assad Planning to Flee to Russia

Basher Assad

Abdallah Al Omar, the former head of the state-run Aleppo TV in Syria and a member of the Presidential Palace Press Office in Damascus, has fled the country, and according to Israel’s Channel 2 News, Omar claims that Syrian President Bashar Assad is making final preparations for his exit out of the country and into Russia. Omar claims that over 300 apartments have been made available in Russia for Assad and his senior officials if they choose to flee Syria. His claims could not be independently verified. Following an explosion that killed Syria’s defense minister in July, reports began to circulate that Assad’s family was in the process of fleeing to Russia.   However, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said a report that Bashar Assad’s wife, Asma Assad, was already in Russia, was “a joke”.
Omar, who denounced the Syrian government three days ago, says he will reveal information from meetings between Assad and Iranian and Russian officials in Damascus.
