Should the European Treaties Be Changed?

Before the present EU nation-states can aspire to a proper political unification, they should first integrate. In view of this, a few of their national Members of Parliament, professionally chosen and specially appointed, should become itinerant MPs and reside in other hosting EU states working with their national parliaments and not in Strasbourg. The European Central Bank should extend its range of action and pursue further aims than the present treaties allow.

Greece’s brinkmanship

Syrisa triumphed in the Greek elections on January 25th. Little time has passed, and yet we can already take a step back and evaluate the event. After a week of astonishment at watching a government actually applying its program (and holding its promises, for a change…), after having duly taken note of the first political actions of Alexis Tsipras’ team (and of his new minister of finances), after having seen the “Troïka,” that is, the alliance of the IMF, the European Central Bank and the European Commission, being remaindered to the storage room of out dated accessories [1], the time has come to examine the strategy of Syriza.

France, Germany make last-ditch peace effort as U.S. weighs arming Ukraine

The leaders of Germany and France on Thursday announced a surprise diplomatic bid to end the conflict in Ukraine, working to forestall White House deliberations about arming government forces amid fears that the war could quickly spiral out of control.
The new peace effort came as civilian and military casualties have mounted by the hundreds in recent weeks. German Chancellor Angela Merkel and French President François Hollande said they would fly to Moscow on Friday to meet Russian President Vladimir Putin to try to strike a deal. The unusual journey underscored the high stakes in the effort to quell the bloodiest European conflict since the Balkan wars of the 1990s.

Is Nigeria on the brink of political collapse?

Between falling oil prices and instability in the country’s north linked to a militant insurgency by Boko Haram, Nigeria could be on the brink of social and political collapse. Nigeria must re-invigorate a national effort against the militant group.
Is Nigeria on the brink of political collapse?
Boko Haram has entered a new phase in its war against Nigeria and its neighbours, as evidenced by the recent spate of attacks against key towns in northern Nigeria. In early January, Boko Haram attacked and occupied the northern Nigerian town of Baga in a brazen attack that resulted in as many as 2000 deaths.

The Nuclear Trials of Ashton Carter

On Wednesday, Feb. 4, the Senate Armed Services Committee held a confirmation hearing for Ashton Carter’s nomination as secretary of defense. The confirmation hearing was smooth — if not for the president’s foreign policy, then for Carter himself. And deservedly so. Carter is superbly qualified to be the next Pentagon chief. And the president should be thankful he agreed to serve.
The Nuclear Trials of Ashton Carter
One of Carter’s first orders of business will be to address the systemic problems in the U.S. nuclear arsenal. The nuclear force is in the news again, with the news that a missileer was sentenced to 25 years in prison on “two counts of sexual assault of a child younger than 16; distribution of marijuana and psilocybin; use of psilocybin; willful dereliction of duty; conduct unbecoming of an officer and a gentleman; pandering; unlawful entry; and four specifications of communicating threats.” He apparently ran a gang. West Side Story it ain’t.
