The dangers of NATO’s power play

The past two years has seen a significant rise in the tension between Russia and NATO. Aggravated by Russia’s annexation of the Crimea, the tension surrounding Russia’s belligerent behaviour has caused an upsurge in sabre rattling from Central and Eastern Europe to the Nordic and Baltic Regions.
The dangers of NATO’s power play
From predictions by former NATO deputy commander, British General Sir Alexander Richard Sherriff, that NATO will be at war with Russia by 2017, to the pronouncements by Swedish Armed Forces’ Maj. Gen.Anders Brännström that: “we could be at war within a few years”, security is paramount for the countries surrounding Russia.

Access to finance, post-Brexit

Αποτέλεσμα εικόνας για brexit financing

Key messages

  • Although financial stress remains contained, several developing country external debt-to-reserve ratios are rising, which could make access to finance prohibitively expensive.
  • Divergent borrowing costs are notable. Although developed country bond yields are low, or, increasingly, negative, developing economies have seen rate rises.
  • The G20 should ensure improved access to finance for developing countries, including to IMF facilities, given the multiple economic shocks they face.

The European Commission announced on Friday (15 July) in a press release that the 28 member states agreed to invest €263 million in trans-European energy infrastructure projects. The biggest share of the support will be destined to the Baltic Sea region to help the expansion of the gas infrastructure, meanwhile the other part of the investment will support the electricity sector across the European Union.

Terrorists Once Used Truck Bombs. In Nice, the Truck Itself Was the Weapon.

Large trucks packed with explosives have become a grim trademark of modern terrorism, killing 241 U.S. service personnel in Beirut in 1983 and ripping through the United Nations compound in Baghdad in 2003, killing 22, including the world body’s top diplomat in Iraq, Sérgio Vieira de Mello.
Terrorists Once Used Truck Bombs. In Nice, the Truck Itself Was the Weapon.
But as militants from groups like the Islamic State and al Qaeda look to kill as many civilians in as many places as possible, they’re skipping the cost, expense, and risk of obtaining explosives and instead simply using normal trucks as more mundane — and cheaper — weapons of war. And as the carnage in Nice, France, has made clear, trucks that aren’t used as bombs can kill as many people as those that are.
