French President François Hollande gave a television interview in which he shifted his stance on the issue of supplying arms to the Syrian rebels, saying: "There can not be any delivery of arms [...] unless we are certain that these weapons will be used by legitimate opponents and not fall into the hands of terrorists. [...] For the moment, we cannot be certain of this."

His comments followed a statement at the European Council on March 14 and 15, when he and British Prime Minister David Cameron, had called for a lifting of the embargo on arms sales to Syria. This stance is opposed by several countries, including Germany.
